Brian Downie, aged 69, faced a judge over a video link from a secure psychiatric unit accused of killing the 81-year-old.
Downie, wearing a smart shirt and jumper and trousers, spoke only to confirm he could hear what was going on over the link from Langdon Hospital in Dawlish.
