Councils in England will from today be able to almost double the maximum on-the-spot fine for littering.

Come to Dawlish, there are cig ends everywhere. They would have a field day.

It's a shame that some of the companies tasked to enforce the anti littering do not abide with the letter of the law themselves. I have read articles where they try and charge people who just accidental drop things from their pockets, bread for the ducks or even breathing into the atmosphere and then try and stop them from picking the said item back up. If you ever get into that situation get your phone out and video record them...they have absolutely ZERO powers...then walk away after picking up what you inadvertently dropped.

It's like the government they reduce the amount of beat officer's so that crime goes up and they can then create even more draconian laws and penalties for the masses.

Taxes, taxes, taxes, penalties and fines makes the gears of westminster grind, oh..it even ryhmes.....ha, ha,ha.

I don't think dropping a cig end is accidental or leaving a can or bottle on the pavementi s accidental. As there have been so few people charged with littering, where have you conjured up "companies tasked to enforce the anti-littering do not abide by the law themselves" where has this taken place? I think it was leatash who commented on students dropping litter at South Devon college and when he told them, they politely told him to get on his bike. And I have had similar experinces, not just with litter but dog fouling as well. But a woman stood and watched her dog poop and then denied it was her dog that did it.

You just have to look outside the Brunswick Arms dozens of fag ends or the two women who run a certain cafe in Brunswick Place who stand outside smoking and throw there dos ends on the footpath.  I noticed the improvements made by Gay's and yet folk sit by the brook eating and throw there paper bags on the floor when there are bins supplied.  Littering is the scurge of modern society and those who litter should be named and shamed and heavily fined.
