Resurfacing work on the A379 Exeter Road in Dawlish was due for completion on March 19.

But Devon County Council have said that freezing temperatures and poor weather has caused the loss of nine working days.

Now the weather has improved highways teams are making up for lost time and working every day to complete the scheme, but a spokesman for the council said that the delay in Dawlish has had a knock-on effect and led to the postponement of three other schemes on the same road.

And I wish drivers would switch off their engines whilst stationary, after all, it is an offence to remain stationary with your engine running. £20 fine rising to £40 if not paid within a time frame. Air polution is as big a problem as is plastic waste.

Calamari, What a stupid question. if the engine is running and you are going nowhere, you are creating polutution whether there is anyone in the vehicle or not.

Exeter City Council have within there plan for improving air quality proposals to start fining drivers who dont switch of there engines when stationary in traffic jams.

Exeter road was a nightmare this afternoon of course no different to any afternoon or morning. The sign flashing stated that roadworks were delayed due to cold weather, perhaps I can understand that. However this afternoon at 2:30 pm the sun was shining and nobody was working, perhaps it was too sunny!

We have another weekend of severe weather on it's way these roadworks could go on and on.

I appreciate the idea and reason behind switching off your engine when stationery, but if I did that with my old car it would break within a short space of time. 

So you are in a Q which keeps on stopping and starting e.g. towards Morrisons from Newton Abbot. Sometimes the Q is a mile long and you would have to switch your engine on/off approx 20-30 times depending how the traffic was behaving.

One of the most demanding operations of a car is the engagement of the starter motor, that being electrical/mechanical demand.

Although many newer petrol/diesel cars now do this as part of their normal operation. So I would assume at some point before all petrol/diesels are crushed and electric becomes the norm this will happen anyway.

I find some drivers are too impatient. When there is a queue of traffic, drivers tend to get too close to the vehicle in front of them and can only therefore see the rear of the vehicle in front of them. If they were to hang back a little they could observe more of what is going on up ahead. If drivers were to pay attention, they would know that the traffic is slowing down or even stopping. As for Exeter Road, when the traffic starts to move (and if you hang back a little) you can see it. That is the time to start the engine and get ready to go. Laws are inplace to protect us all and not leave out those that have a worn out vehicle.

If people did a lot of things differently it might be a better place to live, but sadly that does not seem to be the case.

On an up side there will be no traffic lights and both sides of the road will be open.

In the event of joining a shortish queue, leaving an appreciable gap might indeed make sense.  In a long queue, it would surely double or treble (maybe more?) the LENGTH of the tailback - perhaps through the town, or in the 'Morrison's' location, back to Newton Abbot?  OK, I've exagerated!
