CRIPPLING insurance costs and safety requirements have forced the cancellation of the annual Bonfire Night fireworks at Dawlish Warren.
For the first time in more than 30 years, the display will no longer be held, it has been announced.
The event was to have been organised by Dawlish Warren 41 club.
Efforts have been made to carry on with the event but the tough regulations and rocketing cost of insurance have made it unviable to go ahead.
No pun intended, I hope. Shame that they cannot get the few quid from Teignbridge council, seeing as they have been splashing millions of pounds about over the last year for things such as the shopping centre at Newton Abbot etc
And the concert at Powderham!!!
So more regulation stops a professional fireworks display but anyone can go a buy a bunch of fireworks and set them off anywhere!!
I work for a professional firework firm, ( yes it's a busy time of year!) And we have our own public liability insurance etc, so putting on a professional display shouldn't be much of an insurance issue for the council. I appreciate there may be other considerations and insurance policies to be paid for at staging any event, but the actual display itself wouldn't be an issue. maybe it's a lack of volunteers for crowd control? Or some other concern?
Oh and if dawlish warren wants a display in 2017 I am happy to oblige, as I live in the warren and wouldn't have to go far to set it all up!
