A public exhibition on proposals to extend the Teign Estuary Trail to Dawlish will be held later this month.

The title of the post states 'to Dawlish', but has that not already been decided. The article itself is discussing the trail going through Dawlish. I presume that means the discussions will be on how the trail goes through Dawlish on its way to Teignmouth!
From my experiences with most, but not all, cyclist's who share the same path as walker's around Dawlish. They are not only inconsiderate towards walker's, but can be abusive and on occasion confrontational.
I see no option, within these proposed discussions, for the people of Dawlish to say they do not want to have to share a walkway with cyclist's. If you're going to have a cycleway then have it physically seperated from walker's - for the protection of walker's.
The reason they split a footpath in half and call it a cycle/footpath, in my opinion, is that it is cheaper than a seperate cycleway and allows more miles of cycleway to be boasted about by individual councils/Districts. Oh! and the extra cash for the more miles of cycleway they have.
The Exe Estuary Trail goes from Exeter Quay to Dawlish. The ambition is to link the Teign Estuary Trail to the existing EET, so that there's a safe route for cyclists and pedestrians between Exeter and Kingsteignton.
Cyclist bashing on on forums like this is just a cheap way of getting "Agrees" or "Likes". Normally written by people who could really do with doing some exercise.

As someone who visits Dawlish twice a year on holiday, I sincerely hope there will be no attempt to amalgamate the cycle route with the sea wall walking route. The peace and tranquility of walking along the sea wall – Dawlish’s unique selling point in my opinion – would be ruined forever if you were having to step aside for cyclists every 30 seconds. Anyone who doubts this theory should try walking along the Padstow shared cycling and walking route on the track bed of the old railway. I tried it last summer and must say it was a stressful and irritating experience due to the bullish attitudes of many cyclists who wanted to pass by. I know it’s fashionable to create cycling routes, but please don’t let it be at the expense of Dawlish’s superb walking assets!
No need to fear Will. The cycle route doesn't incorporate the sea wall. And hasn't done since it was opened many years ago. The cycle route, from the Warren to the Town, is along the cliff-top shared route.
People think that the answer to shared routes is a dividing line along the middle of them, obviously haven't walked along Exmouth front. Where pedestrians wander all over the place completely oblivious to the clearly marked lanes.
That chip must be weighing you down!
@Willkilner - the sea wall is already ruined by ignorant cyclist who ignore the new barriers and signs placed on the sea wall advising these cretins not to cyle along it. the last thing a walker needs is a retard on a push bike trying to get passed on top of a 10 foot plus wall with concrete and rocks below.
If i had my way I would have their push bikes confiscated and sold at auction with the money going to local charities.

Will, rest assured that the sea wall isn't "ruined" by the very occasional (and always non-Lycra-clad) cyclist. Those that do use it have always, in my experience, slowed right down when approaching pedestrians. And to confirm, in case the water has been muddied, the cycle route will NOT be along the seawall. Which was all you were asking in the first place.
So please don't be put off by those that make mountains out of molehills. Enjoy your next trip to Dawlish.
Thanks for the responses folks - much appreciated. It's reassuring to know that the plans don't include the sea wall. I'd love to go to the consultation, but being 270 miles away and holding down a 9-5 makes it awkward. However, I know the good folk of Dawlish will turn out in numbers and have their say. For the record, I think you can keep both cyclists and walkers happy if it's done in the right way. For example, the section from Powderham to Turf has been much easier to walk along since a separate cycle lane in the dip was created. Not saying it was really bad before - it's just much better now
