Dawlish Discussion

Today 72 years ago thousands of young British troops along with our Commonwealth and American troops stormed the beaches in Normandy to rid the world of the German oppression in Europe. Many never came back they gave thier life's for our freedom, a freedom that has been granted to us by thier sacrifice. Now all these decades later we are being dictated to again by Germany... France of course was liberated and they also dictate to us . Now we have another importent decision to make come June 23rd and ask yourself did these brave men give up thier live's for nothing. Vote OUT we will survive. Or vote in for much of the same if not more from Brussels.

I thought the reason the EU (as it is now) originally come into being was to prevent a repeat of European countries going to war with each other. 

I thought NATO was created for that purpose.  

When we joined the Common Market in 1973, and again when the referendum was held in 1975, all I remember was that trading with Europe seemed to be only topic on the agenda.

Let's think.

We, the allies, invaded Europe because of a mad dictator who wanted to rule the world.

NOTHING to do with the European Union which now seems to have crossed that bridge and despite little skirmishes  mainly due to Football, (more to come from June 10th) everyone seems to get on well.

Where do a lot of English go on holiday? France, Spain, Germany (which I love) and all over Europe.

So as Lynne says, it seems to have worked.

Strange as it may seem, people did take holidays in mainland Europe before the creation of the Common Market/EU.

It makes me sick to the stomach that people are trying to score xenophobic political points from the sacrifice that brave people like my grandfather made all those years ago. Totally sickening. 

Yes, and my late father fought in the second world war, and I damn well know which way he would vote if he were still alive today.  Stop trying to claim the moral high ground Mrs C.

NATO includes the US and Canada. It is a military organisation

The EU has European* countries only. It is more of a economic and political organisation.

* cue postings about Turkey.  

So is Morty Vicker, Mrs C then? Whoever Mrs C is! I assume someone who has been kicked off here before?

Mrs C has a long history on this forum, with so many different aliases it's hard to remember all of them now.  And yes, the webmaster has booted her off at least twice, but she insists on coming back under yet another name, though is instantly recognisable whatever name is used.

The sacrifice and bravery of our forefathers in the battle to free Europe from a murderous regime will be forever in our hearts, despite the passing of the years. 

It is only natural to ponder what those who are no longer with us would have thought was the right thing to do for the ongoing security of our country.

Victory in Europe should be remembered as that point in history when this country was at one in the celebration of the triumph of the allied forces. To have evoked such thoughts through the vainglorious headlines of the Brexit camp is unforgiveable. There will be no such victory in Europe, whatever the outcome of the referendum on 23rd June.
