Punters hoping to be dropped off at the Powderham gig will be in for a shock because organisers have banned cars from stopping anywhere near the castle venue.
It means they will have to dip into their pockets and pull out £27 to park in the Earl’s grounds or find £11 for a park and ride service – which will be operating from Dawlish Leisure Centre, Exeter Racecourse and Matford Park and Ride Car Park
So because Powderham don't want the headache of organising the parking on their land, which they normally do, The local community that forked out for it has to endure the inconvience instead, If that's not a Foot You to the local people I don't know what would be.
A letter has been sent by TDC to Kenton and Starcross residents describing in great detail the road plans, transport arrangements and other pertinent information for the weekend. There will also be a community meeting in Kenton on 18 May, being held by reps of the BBC, Powderham and transport authorities.
There's a ferry service from Exmouth which I thinks a great idea. Nearly fully booked though.
Powderham is presumably making a fair amount of money from this event. It seems only just that they should incurr some of the inconvience of mass volumes of vehicles by opening up their fields for parking. They seem to have had no issues with this in the past!
As a perfectly legal and car tax paying member of the public I would just like to know who is going to stop me driving along the A379 into Kenton to drop off my kids and pick them up later. As far as Im aware the Powderham estate or the BBC do not own the road and unless there is urgent need then niether TDC or DCC have the right to close or obstruct the road, as this is a private event on private ground.
If Powderham or the council dont wish to provide adequete parking then they should be prepared to finance suitable free transport to and from the event. If not then the event should be re-located to a more suitable venue
Who told you that the A379 is going to be closed?
With other events Powderham are the orgasnisers and sell tickets that include parking i oresume as it is a free event they are charging for parking and have a agreement with TDC to close there car parks that they own to force those attending to park on there fields. Fred i presume you can drop your kids off and pick them up later as the A379 is open and there are no road closure notices in the pipeline.

Fred it depends if the Police are in charge it is a arrestable offence not to follow directions from a Police Officer but if civilians are in charge off directing traffic theres nothing they can do to stop you dropping off your children. There always have been Police Officers directing traffic at these events but it may be that the BBC or Powderham are not willing to pay the associated cost and will have civillians directing traffic. I will add that just because you have a up to date VEL this gives you no right in law to stop or park were you want to it only gives you the right to drive on the highway and nothing else Vehicle Excise Licence is what it says its a Excise Licence allowing your vehicle to use the public highway.

If you can't stop on the main road, what's to stop you driving down a side street and stopping there to pick up or drop off? You'd have to liaise by phone to make it a quick thing I expect but surely that would be possible, even if it meant picking up somewhere in Starcross. Little bit of a walk wouldn't hurt!
A similar thought went through my mind but along the lines of if those who live along the road in Starcross/Kenton have private drives/off road parking what's to stop them allowing cars to pick up and drop off on their private property?
Might appeal to those with an entrepreneurial eye (if they wanted to charge) or those who wouldn't charge but would just do it
as an 'up yours' gesture to the authorities.

According to the Gaz the headline acts should finish their sets by 10.00pm. (but it could always be a bit later I guess)
How long will it take to leave Powderham and walk along to Starcross station given the crowds?
The last train going in the Newton Abbot (and therefore Dawlish and T'mouth direction) will leave Starcross at 10.44pm.
A GWR spokesperson said: " I would urge customers to allow extra time for their journeys to get to Starcross ..........the station is expected to be a lot busier than normal. A queuing system will be in place and travellers are advise to leave early and take advantage of quieter trains".
TRANSLATION? If you want to get back to Dawlish/T'mouth/NAbb by train then you may have to forego seeing the headline act.

You're unlikely to be aware, but on every normal Sunday you can't catch a train from Exeter to Starcross or Dawlish Warren after 9pm. That's surely more worthy of you getting hot under the collar over?

Have now managed to speak to Teignbridge Commmunications Officer, Emma Piercy, who seems to be co-ordinating much of the travel side of the BBC R1 weekend.
I understand that letters have been delivered to those roads which abut Sandy Lane, giving telephone numbers for any compalints re parking etc
They have not appeared in Lower Drive, but I have suggested that as the next exit off the A379 after Sandy Lane, the residents here should also be given this information.
I have also suggested that at the entrance to Hendy Avenue off the A379, notices are posted stating there is no parking for event traffic.
I understand there are in fact 1000 parking spaces on the Sandy Lane site, and these will be on a pre=reserved basis. What happens if they get sold out, and anyone truns up on the offchance remains to be seen!

It seems Dawlish is at the butt end of the 'Taxpayer funded event'. Although I can see that the idea of not allowing vehicles to stop and off load passengers by the event seems a logical step to keep traffic moving.
In reality, because Powderham are not opening their fields, as normal, to the vehicles attending the event the roads are going to be gridlocked right through to Sandy Lane and in to Dawlish with people desperate to find somewhere to park there vehicles.
I do not see how the park and rides that are detailed would work. I say this because the shuttles would have to have unfettered access to and from the event. How would that be possible due to the potential volume of traffic potentially going to Dawlish to park. The shuttles are not going to be flying to the event and as such they will sit in the same congestion as many of the event goers.
Why aren't Powderham allowing more parking on their fields?

All of this will help to put this part of Devon firmly on the map and bring a major boost to the local economy. We do understand, however, that an event of this scale could cause some disruption in the surrounding area, and possibly to your own neighbourhood. We’ve been working closely with the BBC, Powderham Estate and the emergency services to minimise any disruption. We’re enclosing details of plans in place to keep everything running as smoothly as possible.

Arrangements for the Big Weekend, 28-30 May
Road plans
To help ensure the smooth-running of the Big Weekend and manage extra traffic associated with a busy bank holiday, those going to the event must pre-book their travel in advance.
A range of transport options have been put in place including two temporary park and rides - one in Sandy Lane, Dawlish, and the other at Exeter Racecourse.
The Sandy Lane site will operate from 9am until midnight on both days to take people to and from the Big Weekend at Powderham Castle. Cars will park on Sandy Lane playing fields and Sandy Lane car park will be the pick up/drop off point for buses.
The site will be managed and kept secure to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. Signs will direct those attending the event to the park and ride.
Residents can report any issues relating to the event from 10am to midnight on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May. The number is 0203 328 9829.
Sandy Lane temporary park and ride map (see enclosed)
On both days, vehicles will not be permitted to stop or park on the A379 from Warren Road, Dawlish Warren to Sandy Lane, Dawlish and between Cockwood (including New Road, Starcross) and the Swan’s Nest, Exminster.
Signs warning of ‘no event parking’ will be put on roads around the area including in Dawlish, and wardens will be enforcing restrictions.

Illegal car parking
Extra wardens and traffic police will be patrolling the area to minimise illegal parking and deal with any obstructions or incidents. Any parked vehicles causing an issue on the highway can be reported to Devon County Council on 0345 1551 004. For any vehicles causing an obstruction please contact the Police on 101.
Litter
Teignbridge District Council’s road sweepers will carry out additional road sweeping during and after the event, and undertake regular litter clearances of the Sandy Lane car parking area.
Dawlish Leisure Centre
Dawlish Leisure Centre will be closed on Saturday May 28 and Sunday May 29. It will reopen on bank holiday Monday, May 30, from 9am until 4pm.
We would like to reassure you that this is a temporary parking site for the duration of the event only, and will be returned to its natural state once the area has been cleared.
The letter from TDC is accompanied by a map of Sandy Lane Playing Fields showing where the park and ride cars will be parked.
The area is divided into 4. As I can't put the map on here I will try and explain where they are.
Car parking area 1 is located between Dawlish Leisure Centre and the chidren's playground.
Car parking area 2 is located to the north side of Dawlish Leisure Centre (where the football pitch is).
Car parking area 3 is in the old hockey pitch area. Looks like some of the houses on Exeter Road and some houses on Henty Avenue will abut on to this.
Car parking area 4 is to the north of car parking area 3. Again it looks like some houses on Henty Avenue and on Henty Close will abut on to it.
Let's hope it doesn't rain! Can you imagine what the fields will end up looking like if that should happen!!
Those fields are used for football and will be ruined after this weekend.
Seeing as TDC see fit to waste tax payers money (without consutation) on distributing leaflets and parking notices etc, and are also putting the Sandy lane fields at risk of being ruined should it rain resulting in more expense. This in addition to monies already donated and assuming the extra police, stewards and security are also going to be funded locally. Will they in return after the event be publishing a full and concise statement of income and expenditure for this event. From what has been advertised to date it seems this event whillst financially benificial for some is going to cost the rest of us council tax payers an absolute fortune. If this proves to be the case will it result in the sacking of those at TDC who have put the public funding at such risk.
Also to confirm another comment on this discussion, does anyone have a full list of the catering and other retailing outlets that will be trading on site showing of course their home trading address. I very much doubt that many of them will be local.

As probably the only contributor to this forum who's going to be attending OBW, I've already said that I'd advise the forum about the catering outlets. I know of two Dawlish businesses that will definitely be there. And that's just two because I know them personally and they've told
me. One of them also said that the vast majority of outlets will be from Teignbridge and Exeter.
Can we have names of all catering outlets.

sorry @BEE9, the way you were asking suggested that you had an urgent need to know. i didn't realise that you didn't really care.
I've been told (by TDC) it is the BBC that can answer such questions as:
1. the names and business addresses of all those who will be offering catering facilities
2.the process by which these caterers were chosen
3.What costs they have each had to pay (and to whom) to be able to trade at the festival
Ok, sorry to be a bit thick here, but say you get this information, it is highly unlikely that you will get it any time soon and it will probably be long after the event is over. So what exactly are you going to then do with that information? There seems to be a bit of an obsession with the food stands at the event.
If it is the BBC who are answering the questions then surely it is the BBC who have the contract to hand out to traders, so it isn't a direct decision made by anyone on our local Council or Powderham Estate, the BBC have "rented" the venue and so they are setting the rules, so it isn't really a stick you can beat them with. And in any case it is going to be after the event, which is a one off, is done and dusted. So why exactly does it matter? There isn't an event like this ANYWHERE, where the food outlets aren't sub-contracted out and the charges set to cover the cost to those traders in actually being at the event and paying all their associated costs. And I have yet to go to a concert (haven't been to a festival but I expect they are similar) where there aren't restrictions on what food you can or can't take into the venue. If you go to the O2 in London as an example, you can buy food at outlets inside the building/tent thing at restaurants etc. But when you go through the ticket gates into the concert hall itself you have to give anything up and then purchase from the more expensive stands inside that area. It is just how it is. It is how they cover the HUGE costs that they have.
I am not going to this event, no-one in my family is connected with it, trading at it or attending it so I have no agenda on this at all. I am just STUNNED by how much time people are spending worrying about an event that will be over in a few short days and that will yes, be a little be inconvenient for some, but will bring huge amounts of pleasure to others. Does it really matter if the food stalls are all run by people who live within say a 10 mile radius of the venue? Are we that insular in Dawlish/Teignbridge/Devon?
I recently commented about the many occasions when our sea front cafes cannot be bothered to open on a fair weather day why on earth should we be bothered if they don't get a bumper pay day at the Big Event. I'd agree that I'm not happy that our money was given towards this event, but apart from that I won't be losing sleep over it, it's what it is and it'll soon be gone and forgotten and I hope those who attend have a great time.

The reason people have a problem with this event is because it is being financed by the taxpayer (BBC & Council Tax), yet are being ripped off as though it is a normal commercial venture. It is not comparable to a concert at the O2.

I resent tax payers money being used to part fund an aristocrat's business venture. I know of people whose relative lives near the estate and they were going to park in her drive and take the 5 minute or so walk to the concert grounds.
Said relative, brought up her visiting family members excitement about the Big Weekend and casually mentioned the parking arrangement in conversation with an estate worker recently, who told her that he didn't think that was allowed! On what grounds?
Perhaps they'll construct a tithe barn next, oh hang on that'll be Forde House.
Leisure Centre will be closed in Dawlish Saturday/Sunday for anyone who usually goes there.
Why? because of the car parking, or can't you have a fun anywhere else unless you're going to the Big Weekend?
My husband works on the roads and he tells me that the council notice posted above by Gary Taylor on 16th May is made under the wrong section of law and most likely unenforceable. Apparently special events require notices to be made under section 16A Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. The council notice is made under section 14 which is for notices where road works are taking place or where there is a threat of danger such as fallen trees.
That is interesting, Lisa.
It's probably too late for DCC to change the notice type with less than one week to go - but in any case I would hope most motorists would wish to abide by the spirit of the notice and the number of signs advising 'no stopping', in order to keep traffic flowing well past the site.
Let's hope also that some flexibility is employed by those marshalling the event. I have heard for instance that some local residents with tickets were originally advised to drive to Exeter to get the park-and-ride to obtain entry. Common sense, I understand, in these circumstances should now prevail.

Is that not the Strand in Starcross rather than the Strand in Dawlish? If Dawlish for some reason, then that makes no sense. If Starcross, then I'm sure the few businesses there won't be too bothered as the extra footfall will make up for it.

Parking is suspended in both The Strand in Starcross and The Strand in Dawlish (times per posted notices) - but for entirely different reasons.
Starcross per the Powderham bash above, but Dawlish will be having a big weekend of its own - with a number of events planned, starting on Friday 27th (before the road closure) with a charity coffee morning at Luscombe Castle (if you've never been it is fabulous 'gothic folly' style residence in a glorious setting - and really not to be missed). On Saturday there will be a Street Market on The Strand combined with a Family Fun Day on The Lawn, then on Sunday there is a vintage cycle bash and scooter rally on The Lawn (2 wheels definitely the way to go next weekend - but there will be 4-wheeled classics on display also in Teignmouth) plus concerts, arts and crafts, games and all sorts right through the following week.
There is a sixteen page event guide for Dawlish and Teignmouth now available from most town centre outlets. Please come and support these events and local traders - and don't miss out on the fun!

Well, I have been talking to a friend today who is going to the concert. Mum, dad and two children. The concept of a free concert went out of the window weeks ago, as we all know. Tickets are NOT free when you have to pay the ticket master £8.50 for each ticket! Park and ride is £11 per person so, as they cannot afford £44 they are paying £27.50 to park in Powderham grounds. Who is getting all that money? And then they cannot take food in, just one bottle of water each, so they will eat a big breakfast and then eat a sandwich lunch in their car before entering the grounds. Let's hope this thread is not subject to covert monitoring otherwise they might be rumbled and charged for eating their own food in their own car on the public highway!

So going back to my previous post on the subject of catering - Lynne you now have the information you wanted. To what purpose exactly? What was the point? All this is just such a waste of time and energy. But I will admit to being slightly amused by just how much of a lather people are getting in over it. With the millions of pounds of tax payer money wasted every year, or spent on projects that I don't personally like or agree with but others love and think essential, this is such a tiny drop in the ocean. No-one is being "ripped off" over this concert - go or don't go, up to each person individually. But for those who have chosen to go it will be CONSIDERABLY cheaper than any other comparable concert/festival, even if they spend to park/park and ride and eat in the venue.

I just feel you and DJ aren't going to get any joy regarding this topic because you don't see any validity in asking questions about how the event is managed from the outset.

1) HOW CAN I GET A TRADER'S PITCH AT RADIO 1'S BIG WEEKEND?
Central Catering Services will be managing the concessions process for the event - if you are interested in applying to trade, please email them on concessions@centralcatering.com They will be able to provide you with details of how to register and the relevant costs for pitches. Please note the closing date for applications was Friday 26th February - however it is possible late applications may be accepted in some areas.
2) I AM INTERESTED IN SUPPLYING SPECIALIST SERVICES TO THE EVENT - WHO DO I CONTACT?
You have already come to the right place! Last year we received offers of everything from tents and crowd control barriers, to people wanting to offer skateboarding lessons and even a professional wrestling show. Our events team monitor this email account on a regular basis and, if they are interested in getting more information about your company, will get in contact with you. Please don't be offended if you don't hear back from them personally however - it just means we aren't looking for assistance in your particular area.
3) CAN MY CHARITY HAVE A STAND AT THE EVENT TO PROMOTE WHAT WE DO?
Unfortunately there is only limited space at the event and we are not able to accommodate local groups wanting to have a stand over the weekend.
4) CAN I GET TICKETS FOR MY CHARITY TO GIVE AWAY?
No, sorry, but we are not able to give tickets out to good causes for competitions or giveaways. If you are emailing to ask for tickets for someone due to their special circumstances, we will get back to you nearer the event. We do get a lot of requests however, and can only usually help with a small number of them, so we would urge you to also try applying for tickets in the usual way.
5) CAN MY BAND PLAY AT THE EVENT?

EVENT PARKING - With the big weekend event approaching. We are pleased to advise that private parking for around 20 cars will be made available at our Firbank Garage site opposite Shutterton Ind Est from Friday 7.30am - 11.30pm there will be a daily charge of £20/car and there will be no blocking in permitted and strictly no overnighting. The Hop2 bus stops are just 20 metres away and across the road returning. This is private land unsecured and not insured so you park at your own risk. It's only £10 to park at the orchard field at Cockwood harbour. Much nearer and obviously much cheaper.

2. I know that at one time a member of the Jeffries family was a TDC councillor but that was some time ago. So do they have one

LN. It's the orchard on the left hand bend after the harbour and towards Starcross. I've no idea who owns it, and frankly don't care.
Just had an e-mail back from the Beeb saying okay to put contents of the email they sent me on websites. So here it is.
"Teignbridge Council have passed on your details to us as the BBC has responsibility for arranging on-site catering facilities at Radio 1’s Big Weekend.
The event is being managed by the BBC’s Popular Music Live Events team, who run a wide range of events and festivals across the year. The two green field events looked after by the team are Radio 1’s Big Weekend and Radio 2’s Proms in the Park/Festival in a Day weekend; and a tender to provide catering services at the two events was advertised in March 2016.
The successful bidder for the combined contract was Central Catering Services – a well establish festival catering provider. The price they offered the BBC is commercially sensitive and not some we are able to comment on.
As is normal practice at many festivals, Central Catering then sub-contracts to a wide range of individual outlets, charging each a fee for their pitch. The BBC is not directly involved in the decisions as to which companies are chosen and does not hold details of the successful companies at our offices here in London. Pitch fees will likely vary depend any on various factors - structure, location, size, type of food etc. It is also worth saying Central Catering used their website and social media to try and engage new suppliers, with a special focus on local suppliers, to provide a range of festival foods."

Sadly, some misguided folk will agree with your neonsense about it being a backhander. Local businesses and individuals are all benefitting from this once in a generation opportunity. That's why TDC quite rightly are contributing towards the costs of this event.

Teignbridge District Council are in the business of commercial arrangements these days (Bovis, Strongvox, Cavanna, Redrow), but not necessarily in the best interests of those who live in the area.
Feel free to agree or disagree.
Its cost the council tax payers a dam sight more than the 200k donated without consutation by TDC and DCC. Resufacing the footpaths around the castle entrance and the general street cleaning alone have cost more than that on top. Quite looking foward to presenting a F.O.I request for a breakdown of costs against income for the event as a whole. A guess would be its cost the local (including Exeter in that) tax payers in excess of £1million. Its the hidden things that cost like admin, H&S, risk assesments by NHS, Police and Fire services and loads of other stuff.
The big unknown that may well play a part is the weather. If it rains heavily and the main arena turns into a mud bath the health and safety lot will have no option but to clear the site. Have seen this happen before and then nobody makes any money. Outdoor event planning is a risky business financially.

I'm so pleased for all concerned that it appears to be going really well at Powderham, I wasn't interested in going and have had an equally lovely time in and around Dawlish on a lovely day(still wondering when Pirates Chest or whatever it is called on the seafront is going to open though but that's another thread!!). I'm just insensed fredBassett with a little pot and black going on, no doubt there are a few regular F.O.I presenters and if only they stopped and thought for a minute how much these F.O.I's must be costing, whole industries are being set up to manage these. It now looks likely that quite often they are only submitted in order to score points on forums like these and really won't make diddly squat difference in future decisions. It is people's right to submit these requests but please don't knock others for wasting tax payers monies when you're probably wasting as much with little or no benefit to anyone.
I've never requested a FOI, but I would request one in relation to the Big Weekend. Elected bodies that do deals behind closed doors and do not consult those they represent and use public money unwisely should be held to account. It's a question of transparency and democracy.
Lots of people are unhappy with TDC and many in DTC over Powderham, Housing, Sewage, etc. I doubt they're all concerned with petty point scoring. To suggest so is frankly insulting.

It's a vicious circle really. If taxpayers money wasn't wasted in the first place, which you don't refute, consequently there would be little need to make FOI requests.
It's like saying 'please don't knock corruption, because investigating or exposing it will cost 'us all even more in monetary terms'. It's absurd. It's so submissive and passive. Not everyone just bends over and lets others shaft them.
Plus there's more to it than just money.
And what industries? Do you mean the civil service can't cope with complaints against local and national government these days? Hardly surprising. The onus is on government to get their s**t together. Not on the public to stay silent.
@Liberal Democrat, perhaps you should now request your FOI given the disclosure of the additional £100,000 this event cost, split evenly between Exeter and Teignbridge. An FOI would reveal the true cost of this wasteful event to taxpayers, they have a right to know!

I would have hoped that if they had, then they'd have shared the outcome with us all.
