Fears over fragile rail links in Devon and Cornwall after line rock falls

A Westcountry MP is to write to the Government over increasing concerns about the stability of the South West’s only mainline railway link.

Oliver Colvile, MP for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport, says that opening an alternative route into the peninsula is “certainly something the Government should be looking into.”.

Mr Mitchell said it was highly likely that a major landslip could bury a train, or sweep it into the sea.

He warned as early as 2003 that the emergency services needed to rehearse for a buried train or one derailed into the sea.
