Beekeepers with “insider knowledge” about rival colonies are thought to be behind the latest theft of thousands of honey bees.
You would have to know where the hives were, you would have to protect yourself and you would have to go into the hive and know what you were looking for, which can be very difficult. Even experienced beekeepers fail to find the queen sometimes.
Mr Lovett said that queens were bought and sold for around £40 to £50 and that the haul from this latest theft would be unlikely to sell for much more than £150. He said it would also be tricky as beekeepers are wary about fuelling the black market.
Last year, two hives filled with thousands of honey bees were stolen from Dawlish, Devon, during the night.
