Patterns have always played a role in home decor, and the latest trends seem to revolve around big bold patterns and mixing them with other patterns that complement each other.  According to Tidbits and Twine, the most important role of working with multiple patterns is making sure the patterns complement each other rather than compete with each other.  Patterns will always be a classic home décor style, especially if they are paired with timeless furniture to keep your home décor from becoming outdated.  Here is some more advice for decorating with patterns.
 
Working with multiple patterns
 
It is recommended that you use an odd number of patterns when using multiple patterns.  For some reason odd numbers look the best, so consider using three different patterns in three different scales.  Start small, and then when you master decorating with patterns, challenge yourself with more.  One way to prevent your patterns from competing with each other is by using different scales of patterns: one large, one medium, and one small, even if they are in different colors.  In order to ensure that your patterns all flow together, use one pattern that incorporates all the colors of the other two patterns.  It you are using multiple patterns in a room, all the patterns you use should have similar features to help them work together instead of cause chaos.  Patterns should please the eye instead of cause headaches.
 
Where to use patterns
 
Patterns belong anywhere from linens to pillows to rugs to wallpaper.  Many people think wallpaper is outdated, but it is actually a new trend to use patterned wallpaper as backdrops for bookshelves, cabinets, closets and other areas.  Large patterns look the best on large pieces of furniture and small patterns look the best on small furniture.  Small patterns tend to look busy, which is why using them on large furniture might be too much.  If you want to avoid repainting rooms that are already painted, use patterns on linens, pillows and furniture that are different shades of the color painted on the wall. This can liven up the vibe of the room.
 
Patterns of different colors
 
Mixing and matching colors is definitely acceptable, but once again be careful with the scale of the patterns so they do not end up clashing.  Throw solid colors into the mix to tone down the busy vibe multiple patterns can sometimes bring.  It is wise to stick with a consistent hue and use colors with consistent intensities to help your patterns work together instead of against each other.  Be creative with your pairings.  There is not a rule book for which colors and patterns are allowed to go together, and your home should be unique from everyone else’s.  So play with your patterns and colors and let them create character for your home.
