News about the next two services to remember Dawlish servicemen who gave their lives during World War One. A series of services are being held on the 100th anniversary of each death.
We would like to remind you that 2nd Lieut. Wilfred George Jackson will be remembered on Monday 27th April at The Manor House, commencing at 12 noon
Gunner Edward Mudge will be remembered on Tuesday 28th April
at St Agatha’s, commencing at 12 noon
Edward Mudge is buried in Dawlish cemetery having died whilst at home on sick leave, the cause of death was haemorrhage of the lungs. He was aged just 20
His family were living at 37 Manor Row and Edward was working as a Fishmonger’s errand boy before the war. He enlisted into the 4th Wessex Brigade, Field Artillery.
His funeral at Dawlish Cemetery on Saturday 1st May saw the young soldier afforded full military honours, complete with Bearer Party and Trumpeter.
By a strange quirk of fate, a wreath was presented by the Quartermaster of the VAD at Dawlish Hospital, Mrs Hildyard. She was not to know that her own nephew 2nd Lieut. Wilfred George Jackson had been killed just days before ……..
