General Discussion

Do stop this babyish complaining about dogs.

If you'd been to India, you'd realize what real pollution was, and stop this infernal grizzling about dogs.

It really is the pathetic whining of a pampered generation who don't realize how lucky they are to live in a civilized town.

Grow Up, and learn to enjoy life instead of searching for faults!

What a stupid comment! So you won't mind if the bins aren't collected, if the water bills treble, if the leccy goes off, if cholera returns, if hospitals close etc etc. You really want to hasten our 'progress' toward becoming a third world town?

Hey, don't be too harsh - the guy has a point. Maybe sometimes we forget how lucky we are living in one of the nicest areas of the UK.

Have you ever been up North ? There are horrible places like Bradford and Leeds where dog sh*t is the least of your worries. I should imagine that India & other third world countries have even worse problems.

I am all for making the town perfect & maybe with a few more security cameras around the town we can achive this…

Yes, the supreme benefits of Dawlish - plus as you point out, access to Utilities- are paramount. Yes, there is maybe one tiny problem - dogs - but its possibly only 0.05% of the Big Picture. Worth mentioning still, but put in perspective.

Its like saying 'eat up your brussel sprouts because of the starving millions' isn't it? Just as illogical and irrelevant. Sorry Nick, not clearing up after your dog is irresponsible, lazy and disgusting. And illegal.

It kinds of spoils the view when you can smell dogsh*t. And there's a three year old kid who will never enjoy Dawlish Warren beach again, because she is dead as a result of ecoli poisoning from dog sh*t.
Kind of puts it in perspective doesn't it?

You know, being realistic, nobody is going to clean up after a dog on Dawlish Warren beach. Dig a hole would be the best likelihood. - or ban them.

Is it established that dogs were the sole contaminant - definitely not in the sea water?

'She had been infected with E.coli 0157 - a bacteria which has only been recognised for a decade, and about which very little is known.

However, it is known that it can only be contracted by ingesting infected excrement.'

That seems to be pretty conclusive to me.
You say that realistically noone is going to clean up after their dog on the beach. If there was a hefty on the spot fine they would. Yes, some people are lazy and irresponsible - thats why we have laws. People would drink and drive if it wasn't illegal and the law strongly enforced, and most people see this is a just law.
What worries me in Dawlish is the number of people who think dog fouling is OK. Its not - its a real health hazard as well as environmentally polluting. People are trying to excuse fecklessness, sorry but its pathetic.

Ive worked on the beach at the Warren and Teignmouth for 3 years, and I would like to point a few things out.
Quite a majority of out visitors come on holiday here because of the fact that we are a dog friendly area and to stop allowing dogs on the restricted area of the beach would force a lot of tourists to find somewhere else to spend their vacation. The council has to find a 'happy medium' to suit everybody. A few locals would also like to ban water skis & bikes from the lido end of Teignmouth beach, that would also cause trouble, finding a space for everyone to do their choice of pastimes (including dog walking)is a very difficult job.
On the subject of the death of a little girl, as tragic as it was, I have on many occasions been asked by the health & enviroment to check out and take samples of sewerage looking slips near the beach from the warren down to the train station, and I will inform you that this was NOT dog muck it was human waste about 20/30 yds off the sand!!! Damaged pipes? or not going far out enough?
Ecoil can come from excrement (human or animal) but there are also other ways of contracting the infection. It was also rumered that the child showed signs of illness before arriving in Devon. She had only been here for a few days.
So ease off the locals who like to enjoy themselves without busy-bodies who have nothing to fill their life up with.
Phew sorry that was so long... xxx

When I was a kid I lived in Dawlish Warren (we're talking 30+ years ago).

There was all kind of scungy brown frothy stuff - that had got to be from sewereage outlets.

So from excrement, sure, but human too, right? The pathology of the E Coli bacterium may just have been isolated - but I presume it existed back then too.

Of course people should clean up everywhere - but its one thing taking a dump through Mayor Wally Proteroe's letterbox, another to go on the furthest tip of Dawlish Warren when there is nobody around. People will just dig it into the sand.

Not saying that's ethical - but you can't hire tons of dog wardens in DW unless you are prepared to pay much higher council taxes. ....Money perhaps better spent cleaning the cruddy stinking seaweed off Dawlish Beach.

Your post does not equate with the facts. I am not interested in 'rumour' but in fact. The type of ecoli she died from came from DOG crap.
Yes I'd like to enjoy myself too - but its hard when I'm having to watch out for dog crap because of lazy ***** who can't be bothered to clean up after their dogs. STOP FINDING EXCUSES FOR THESE PEOPLE!

But we wouldn't NEED dog wardens if owners were responsible. Whats the matter with you people?

We already know this....

So what are you going to do....Dog Wardens ? (and lets say thats 200 quid on Council Tax - as the Warren is a big place)

or nothing.

What would be your decision if you were Mayor Protheroe?

You are slightly missing the point in that a lot of people on this site think its OK to not clean up after their dog. Its the justification of the irresponsibilty that is so awful.

If I was Wally Protheroe I would mount a massive publicity campaign via the local press, put more poop bins and signs around and use the neighbour watch scheme to keep an eye on dog walkers. Yes, put up council tax and say why.

Its a battle though, judging by the attitudes on these boards.

As a dog owner and walker I am as offended by lazy scumbags who fail to clear up after their dogs as the next person. I've also organised and presented a petition to DTC to avoid further crippling restrictions on the places where dogs can be exercised. There are a great many responsible dog walkers and, as was said earlier, a lot of holiday makers do come to the area and stay on camp sites or holiday parks because they are welcomed and allowed to take their dogs on some beaches.
My campaign would be to identify and retrain the people who habitually let their dogs foul certain routes around town.
Who walks their dog/s on the path from Lea Mount down to Coryton Cove and leaves their mess by the side of the path?
Who regularly allows their dog to dump on Thompsons Path just before Lanherne?
I've thought of making up little stakes and planting them (like Remembrance day crosses)wherever this habit shows itself. It might look ugly but it might demonstrate that other people are on the lookout for habitual foulers.
Dog bins could also be cleaned on the outside and show more aggressive posters to remind people that dog owners must take responsibility. I've suggested this to the Town Clerk and I'm still waiting for action.

The little note idea has been tried before, but to no avail apart for giving the bored kids something to throw around.
However I did once see a photo placed in the window of a local pet store of someone who had bee named and shamed for allowing their dog to fowl at the mannor, I'm not sure but I think that this was sucessfull!!!
I myself have two dogs and I use nappy sac's to pick up their mess, even after work at 3am I still pick it up! Having stepped in crap many times before i would hate to think that someone does the same
So what we need is a spy to photograph and shame the little buggers!!!

I agree - I am hanging around with my digital camera in the hope of catching him in the act. I will contact the Town Clerk too - maybe if enough people do they will start to take notice. I think the Dawlish Post could run a story on it too esp in the light of the number of posters on here defending the practice.

I like that idea - that's what they do in New Zealand along roadsides to commemorate deaths in road accidents.

Ha Ha, UMM, HELLO earth calling Emperor Solarzoom IV. Duh! Obviously we are not talking about static cameras like on the roads, what is needed is a sneeky dog owner, a hidden camera, and lots of time to spare. Then hopefully we could get some photo's for evidence, enlarge them and find a pet shop owner (maybe the one on Park Road)to put them in the window with a 'WANTED' sign!!!

To be honest I think you could start up a new trend, Dawlish could start up a bush mania, that would have to non poop scoopers on the run. I would even pay for the laugh.
So come on all Mighty Emperor show us what you are made of and track down these naughty offenders, take some photos and who knows maybe the Webmaster would let you post the evidence on this site them we can all help track them down.

Why are house prices higher in Topsham and Lympstone then?
Bet they don't have a dog poop problem there.
All we are saying is that Dawlish is pretty nice but it is spoilt by the actions of certain people. It could also do with an upgrade.

Have you never been told you put a capital B for a toen ..Bradford. Most of the recent postings seem to show something about the standard of english from schools. I take it most of those are teenagers... by the grammer.

Have you seen the scruffy dressed children as they go to Dawlish School and is this acceptable ? ..does the Headmaster care ..do they have one ? ... this is probably why Dawlish is how it is..fall out of school, fall into the pub ! lol

Nothing wrong with Dawlish and the World ..it's the people in it.

I new it would affend some people, but my comment was tongue-in-cheek. I have lived in both Bradford & Leeds, and also in Manchester. Leeds & Manchester are great places when you are a student. Bradford was a bit of a disappointment, but It was my first job.

I now live in Plymouth, but I was born in Dawlish and do miss it a bit, until I visit my parents & friends & then I get bored!

I do intend to retire in Dawlish though, so I don’t want any dog's mess!

I like the dog owners who create street art. I mean they pick the poo up then throw the bag into the hedge and it catches on the branch or brambles and hangs like a Christmas decoration until the bag degrades and the decomposed poo falls back for all to walk in.  Nice!
