Sad story from the Express and Echo:
TRAVELLING man John Treagood has been left stranded on an Exeter roundabout following the death of his faithful horse Gildor.
The even tempered, Irish cob horse, which for the past 18 years has happily hauled Mr Treegood and his small wagon home around Devon, died earlier this week.
A bereft Mr Treagood, 79, said: “I am not sure what I am going to do now. I can’t really talk about it.
“Gildor was a good friend to me and wonderful horse.
“I shall just stay put and not think about what I am going to do for a few days. It is all a bit of a shock.
“I have some friends who might be able to help but I shall wait and see. It’s too soon to talk about that sort of thing.”
Mr Treagood, who is now camped on a roundabout just outside Alphington, said Gildor was 28 years old and he had owned him for the past 18 years.
“He started to lose weight recently and it turned out his kidneys had given up.
“I couldn’t stand to see him suffer I had a responsibility not to do that so he had to be put down.
Aww, saw them only last week. This will be very hard on him. Glad for the good work of the horse charity, why not make a donation for Gildor.
Great news although I'd have to take issue with their use of the word 'infamous' -
I find the polar extremes of opinion regarding this chap when compared to their opinion of other travellers to be quite interesting.
À bit late to see tonight, but a new horse, called Misty, for Devon traveller John Treagood after online fundraising. Hamish Marshall has been to meet them today. See the full story and on BBC Spotlight tonight at 6-30 on BBC One South West.

From Devon and Cornwall Police -
Police are appealing for information after a bridle was taken from a traveller’s horse in Exeter on Friday 20 March.
The well-known traveller John Treagood was parked with his horse and caravan on the Alphington roundabout, underneath the A30, when he was approached by a man driving a white or cream vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle asked the 79-year-old if he was going to sell his horse, before stealing the black leather bridle off the horse while the victim’s back was turned, sometime between 3pm and 5pm.
The suspect is described as white, of large build, in his 40s or 50s, with grey hair.
PC Carolyn Studd, based at Heavitree Road police station, said: “John is very well-known in the area and he can’t get back on the road without a bridle for his horse.
“I would really appreciate help from the public, whether they have witnessed the incident, recognise the description of the suspect, or have any information that could help with our enquiries.”
