I had asked this question during our recent visit to Dawlish Warren. Answers varied but none seemed confident.
We saw the huge numbers of geese arriving from the south every morning then returning south each evening but where do they go to?
Thanks O.F. for the link but it describes the migration habits of the species rather than the daily habits of a local flock.
I was more interested in where the Warren flocks (are they brent geese?) go to every evening and obviously spend the night. I imagine It would likely be near water but protected from predators such as foxes and safer than staying near Dawlish Warren.
Best regards.
No, they are not brent geese (they've only just started arriving for the winter): these are Canada geese. But I don't know where they go at night: maybe the Teign estuary ?
Thanks Flo and Daverc, Teign estuary is a likely area. I will have to get there early in the morning (or late evening) when I visit next summer.
Best regards.
A lot of them congregate on the Exe estuary around the Cockwood (especially on the golf course at high tide) and Starcross area and up at Bowling Green Marsh in Topsham.
You will also find lots of them at the far end of the Warren.
Cant say I have seen them in the Teign estuary though.
Thanks Carer, they certainly do spend much of the day on the Exe estuary but then leave every evening.
My enquiry is about where they spend the night.
Have you visited the Teign estuary in the late evening or night?
When I sit here typing I am facing east. It is not unknown for me to be here around about sunrise. I have seen geese (but don't know what type) flying from a south westerly direction going over Warren Copse, towards the Exe Estuary/Starcross.
Have you tried asking the rangers at the Warren? http://www.teignbridge.gov.uk/dawlishwarren
