Well it costs £10 to go just 3 miles ...so says it all really...
have a look at this fare guide, put some places in, maybe handy to someone
Here's a suggestion - get yourselves sorted and start 'liftsharing'. It's just one form of the concept of 'asset sharing'.
Is non-profit making, so as a norm. does't affect your insurance and can be for short or long distance travel.
Everyone's a winner (except taxis, buses and trains). In France it has caught on in such a big way that the transport unions are getting worried that it's undercutting ther jobs.
Best website to see how it works is to google 'Bla Bla Car'.
Whether through this website or by private arrangement it's a very friendly way to travel. :)
Now in Truro the council in their wisdom charge a ridiculous amount of money for a permit for taxis to stand on the station rank there.
Consequently, there are often so few taxis that unsuspecting arrivals off principal trains have to stand in line for ages whilst the few taxis that do have permits desparately shuttle back and forth trying to recoup the cost of their licence before their business is poached by taxis without a station licence who innocently try to cruise by and pretend they were simply flaged down by customers. I would love a councillor to explain the logic of generating cash for the council at the expense of creating a poor image for the town and hassle for visitors.

More than likely (and remember you said it first Leatash, not me.)
And it seems by the agrees that you are getting that it isn't only you and I who think that way
On a serious note, hopefully the people at the car wash place who are offering “airport runs” are properly licensed for such a taxi service. My concern is with regards to insurance for their passengers.
With regard to Dawlish Taxis, are they exempt from the law that states that babies/toddlers should be in a 'baby seat' as I have seen on many occasions a young mother sitting in the back seat with baby (1 y/o approx) on her lap.
Calamari, the law states:
If the driver doesn’t provide the correct child car seat, children can travel without one - but only if they travel on a rear seat:
