Can anyone solve this for me. Did Tangmere catch fire yesterday as DB webcam showed flames, unless I am wrong. A couple of comments on  YT said it was a reflection.

If you consider the fading light, and how bright the lighting in the carriages therefore seems to be, my best guess is that it is simply a weird trick of relative light exposure making for overdramatic appearances.

If it really was as bad as it appears to be I would imagine the unfortunate driver and fireman would have been charcoal by Exeter - God forbid.

Joking aside, Tangmere did actually have a potentially serious accident last November 23rd at Winchfield on the way back to Waterloo from Weymouth.  It was reported in this month's rail magazines that a connecting pin at the front of it's driving wheels sheared off leaving the long connecting rod potentially able to 'pole vault' the loco off the rails.  Luckily the train was only doing 40mph and doubly luckily the loose rod harmlessly slid along the third rail (conductor rail0.  Showers of alarming sparks but it spared the rod spiking into the ballast until the loco had virtually completed its emergency stop.  A salutry reminder of the good old days when steam locomotives had an innate ability to be spontaneously lethal.
