FORMAL negotiations with land owners along the River Teign are to get under way as Devon County Council takes the next step towards building the multi-million pound Teign Estuary walking and cycling trail.
Following a meeting with councillors, officers are taking the next step in securing the first stretch of route between Newton Abbot and Bishopsteignton.
The 2.5mile route, expected to cost £2.5million is mainly inland of the railway from the Passage House to St Michael’s Field, Bishopsteignton. Some improvement work will be needed between Hackney Marshes, Kingsteignton and the Passage House.
Devon County Council cabinet members were told that there were “significant objections from a major land owner” in the Bishopsteignton area and Cabinet agreed to use compulsory purchase orders if required.
Members heard the first section between Town Quay, Newton Abbot and Kingsteignton which opened last year has been very successful with over 43,000 trips since it opened.
It is expected that similar figures would use the Bishopsteignton stretch.
Officers are also looking at potential funding opportunities.
