Dawlish Discussion

Following the storms there has been lots of work going on, tidying up, I for one think it's great, I think come Easter Dawlish will look better than it did in 2013, with this in mind and looking at other peoples comments would it be a good idea to encourage the moment for work to carry on and maybe improve the town/warren

Just an idea in order to raise £1M we as residents could pay an additional £24 a year council tax & 1% on business rates the town would then be able to improve

What do you think ?

You must be joking i think you would be hard pressed to find any support at all.

Leatash look at my post 5 agrees look at yours only 3 does that not speak for it's self, maybe let this run a little longer get more opinions and agree or disagrees and we can allow this thread to be the answer to the final outcome.

You give TDC an extra £1M to spend and the councillors would all be off on even more jollies, and probably the staff toilets at Forde House would get a refurb. Dawlish wouldnt see a penny.

As for Network Rail carrying on forget it. They only got finished laying the new track last night and already their packing up ready for the off.  They cant carry on working flat out once the trains are running again and the funny thing is neither can anyone else if it involves their property.

I think we are going to have to put up with things as they are for quite some time yet

Ignore him Stephen. He loves nothing more than making up doom and gloom stories. 

What do i say we have a population of about 13000 and 5 of our finest agree its a good idea however long this runs we will never know what the good folk of Dawlish think.

If what is clearly visible is doom and gloom, whats your take on it. Network Rail are only going to do enough work to get the trains running safely once more, they are not going to rebuild the whole town.

If you stood watching the high tide at lunch time battering the sea wall exactly in the same spot as the great hole then Stephen you would quickly realise that nothing has changed and at the moment the tide is only 2.9 metres compared with 3.6 metres at some times in the year.

Its all been a repair and maintainace job not the building of new and stronger sea defenses as some people think

Well the wall at the breach is certainly higher and stronger, also it is their responsibility to repair the sea wall and the whole of the viaduct area, and I think that will commence as soon as the line is open. Be positive Fred

On a positive note Roberta, I hope your right however dont forget the old chestnut "Money" and who's going to pay. Network Rails responsibility is to keep the infrastructure in a fit state to keep the trains running, not to make Dawlish a better and safer place to live. That Im affraid is down to the people of Dawlish itself, but raising council tax as sugested is not going to go down to well.

Maybe the developers of the greater  Gatehouse area council estate should be asked to chip in

If you look at Michael Clayson's posting on Facebook in answer to people living next to the site, you will see that Network Rail has been told by the Government to get the trains running again; that is the priority, everything else is secondary.

I wasn't just on about trains, I was thinking of everything, and if a town raises extra money through CT then that town has control of those funds, the village we lived in prior to moving here, paid for a full time litter picker and groundsman this was in addition to the council staff.

i personaly can't actually think of what to spend the money though i'm sure someone would have good suggestions

I'm really looking forward to coming back to visit soon, my Grandsons were devastated when they heard of the damage, and can't wait to come back and in their words "Check out our favourite place in the world."

We have been watching the repairs via the new webcam and are ticking off the days until we get there

They are working under the viaduct already, so I should think that will all be done for Easter, enjoy your visit
