Pension Credit, Bus Pass, Cold Weather Payments, Winter Fuel Allowance, Free Prescriptions, and the list goes on.
What freebies? Haven't people paid in all their working lives i.e. tax, National Insurance and Graduated Pension (which is something most people tend to forget). Having administered people's wages for most of my working life I can testify that under PAYE people pay a great deal of money to the Government, and this is all before the imposition of indirect taxation. And better-off pensioners still pay Income Tax on their pensions. And then they tax you when you're dead!
Speaking for myself, I never paid National insurance, or any income tax from 1986 until I retired, so it's all freebies for moi.
Perhaps I should have been more specific. Not aged 60+ but those who are, say, turning 60 this year.
What was in the recent past ain't necessarily so now. Things have changed/are changing. Which is why I asked the question.
For example, No bus pass for those turning 60 now (bus pass eligibility geared to women's state pension age - for those women turning 60 this year that age is 65 years +). But, as far as I can ascertain, free prescriptions are still available for those just turning 60.
So - I'll rephrase the question. What can 60 year olds get 'free' or concession wise that 59 year olds can not?
A topical, if somewhat poignant, concession still available for those aged 60+ is the Senior Citizens Railcard. £30 a year for the card gets a third off Standard and First Class Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance fares throughout GB.
Anyone know of any other travel concessions for the aged 60 and above? Air Travel? Coach Travel? Holidays?
