BUILDING work on six eco-houses on a two acre site at Broadhempston is to start in March. The site is just one the Land Society – set up set up three years ago at The Torbay Development Agency's Vantage Point Innovation Centre in Paignton to offer help to people to own their own affordable home – is working with. The society puts together a group of people in a village or town; organises them into a formal Community Land Trust (CLT), helps them find a plot of land, applies for planning and offers self-build training run in partnership with South Devon College together with providing materials, financial, technical and community support. At Buckfastleigh, terms have been agreed on a site earmarked for 40 houses – 18 affordable and 22 open market homes – finance has been completed and people interested in building their own homes are registering their interest. The community trusts are being organised in towns and villages across South Devon including trusts for 30 families in Brixham who have made an offer on land. The society is also about to start working with a group in Plymouth having been approached by many families keen to build their own affordable homes. Land Society director Don Lang said: "Broadhempston was delayed but the planning application has been completed and work can now start. "We are working with many groups including Teignmouth, Dawlish, Kenn, Bovey Tracey, Totnes, Marldon, South Brent, Buckfastleigh, Broadhempston and Moretonhampstead
