The Death of Compassion
We beat our heads ‘gainst walls of brick
so thick without a conscience left to prick.
Un-named and unashamed
behind their walls they fulminate
in festered tones of hate.
We’re all free, they say,
to say it as we see.
For them there is no empathy
which they deride as too “PC”.
Bullies all inside,
they smirk, they smile,
they come alive
as with each racist, homophobic jibe
they twist the knife of spite
and Satan dances with delight
as compassion dies.
Meanwhile, as I've also posted elsewhere, we could all learn a little about compassion from Maureen Greaves: “One year after a Christmas murder, a widow's simple plea: 'Forgive them'.”
