You are correct Lynne it is Venus, and it has been visable for some days.

The bright star that you may see is the Inernational Space Station, it looks like a bright star but that's what it is.

Venus rises from an Easterly direction.

Well.......according to this http://www.darkskytelescopehire.co.uk/brilliant-venus-shines-as-an-evening-star-in-november-and-december/ that bright 'star' low(ish) in the south western sky just after sunset is Venus.

If you Google, International Space Station visibilty, you will see it can't be that. My money is on Venus   or ET.

At the moment the I.S.S. can be seen early in the morning when anybody with any sense is fast asleep.
