Dawlish Discussion

A Devon brook is to be dredged to remove silt and help reduce the chances of future flooding, a council says.

The two-week project to dredge Dawlish Brook, also known as Dawlish Water, would help protect the town centre, Teignbridge Council said.

In August 2012, the brook - which runs through Dawlish town centre - burst its banks when water levels rose by about 2ft (60cm).

Any material removed will be used to restore river banks damaged in 2012.

The council said the brook had 20 weirs and sluices along its length and work was needed because "over the years - and in particular last year's storms - silt and gravel have been washed downstream, creating build-up to an unacceptable level".

If left, Dawlish Lawn in the town centre could be prone to flooding, it added.

I wonder how long it will take for them to start?

Will probably have to have about 20 meetings to decide it.

Also, when it is done, I hope that they will knock that monstrocity of a bandstand down and build one that we can be proud of.

It started today Carer. You're dead right about the bandstand, though I doubt it's within the Environment Agency's remit.

I believe one of the reasons as to why it wasnt built before, was that the lawn is designated as a flood plain.

What happened to the money put by for it is anyone's guess.

Carer, you said it will take about twenty meetings to decide, you left out the forming of  a working party and  a field survey. To say nothing of  a public consultation.

At the current rate of progress, they will be there for a couple of months, unless they are just doing a certain section.

Just look at Tucks Plot section, and youy can see how much needs to be cleared from there.

Should they not start upstream and work down if we get heavy rain  the silt above will be washed into the cleared section answers on a postcard please.

Has nobody here read the notice that's been put up, which clearly states what the schedule of works is, and clearly explains why things are being done in the order that they are?  Goodness me, everyone's a blooming expert round here! 😎

As a matter of fact, no, I haven't seen the schedule of works for the above job.

Please tell me exactly where one can find them, as I will be most grateful.

Also, is there somewhere online? A link would be useful if there is.

Many thanks Michael, and like Duckileaks above, I too have a clear picture now.

So the large build up of debris near the old post office will be left there which is clearly the worst eyesore.

The public notice pdf file says it is good for waterfowl and fish, but is the real reason because it is too expensive to remove?
