I hope i can get some advice from members on here.... When i moved into this apartment May 2012.. I was solicted by a third party offering to set me up with EDF for Thirty Six pounds per month i thought that was a good tarrif so i went with it. Then in June 2012 i went back to the States in June returning here in September. 

Set up home with my wife in September. This apartment is all electric. Now October 2013 my Energy bills have gone something like this....

May 2012 through January 2013... Thirty Six Pounds per month direct debit.

February 2013 through July 2013 Eighty Seven Pounds per month  ''    ''

August 2013  through September 2013  One Hundred Fifty Six Pounds "  "

Now October's Bill  One Hundred Eighty Three Pounds.              ''     "

I have been very frugal with electric usage and EDF tells me that I'm 500 plus pounds in debit. I have called them on a couple of times to explain this dramatic rise. Thier answer was i wasn't quoted enough from the third party in the beginning, and so the bill has become out of hand. I have insisted that they come and check out the metre, as of this writing I'm still waiting............... I suppose it is my own fault not understanding the British way about energy usage.

Any advice from this forum please.

It does seem rather cheap the price you were quoted for all electric. Can they give you a total for what you have used since March12. It seems they are putting your payments up to collect the debt. Wow we run a commercial washing machine & dryer 5 days a week washing towels we are all electric apart from log burner we use £1300 a year.

If you have electric storage heaters have you discovered if you are charging them up overnight on a standard or cheaper overnight tarrif.  When we were in an all electric house we had Economy 7 which meant electricity at night when the heaters charged up was much cheaper than during the day, so we even had the washing machine on timer to come on during the night.  Little things like that can make a massive difference to your monthly bill

Having said that for an all electric property I don't see how you could have only paid £36 per month, especially with all the price rises we have had

"Bait and Switch" however i suppose i was very naive on coming back to the UK with the cost of living. I truly don't know how people on lower income's survive.  These so called storage heaters don't give out much heat.

Brazilnut, is that normal or high i have no idea?  Are those oil radiator heaters expensive to run?  Anyone else have any advice which would be appricated to cut cost's.

members of my family who use those oil radiators say they are cheaper than those night storage heaters, also there is panel heaters and halogen. My costs are for a 3bdroom family house, yours should be less in a flat but not with thosestorage heaters

Stop the direct debit for one, and ask them for a payment card. They will return by saying they want to come and fit a pre-payment meter, dont fall for that. Keep on at them for a payment card leaving you free to pay what you can afford. Check that the storage heaters are on ecconomy 7 night rate if not they will have to come and fit a new 2 stage meter anyway.

Remember EDF energy are French owned con artists who will undoubtly hold this country to energy ransom when the shit eventually hits the fan. They have already backed out of building the new hinckley point nuclear power station because they didnt get their own way from our government.

Tell them you where miss-sold their services and will take them to trading standards if they dont release you from any in place contract. Then shop around carefully insist that your new supplier fits the two stage meter for the storeage radiators, its your right to have this

Just to add to the above its just been on the News that the German owned company E-ON has just crapped on the British pensioners by withdrawing their over 60s fixed price tariff. Again they blame our government.

Why dont they just hand over control to the British people and Fu** off back to their Euro shit countries. They all need a serious reminder of who won the war 70 odd years ago.

BB check out your rights before you do anything don't rely on what someone on here tells you.                Fred Bassett, the British may have won the war back then but who's winning it now and who's laughing at who. So really you want a company to pay £270 million to buy a business then give it to the British because we beat them in a playground fight 70 years ago. have you heard yourself ?
