Extract from an e-mail sent out by Dawlish Chamber of Commerce.

"Draft programme for the upcoming works;

  1. Mon 1st July to Fri 19th July (approx.) – Stone wall works, surfacing of sections of the footpath and ducting works all of which are for TDC. Additionally we have some works in the private footway areas which will be done during this period. Some road marking alterations in TDC car park and installing taxi bays near Café One will be completed during this period too.
  2. Re-visit to site in mid-August (approx.) – to install street furniture (fence, railings and seats) dates to be confirmed once agreement on types are made and orders placed."

Just had a look at the planting of the 'mud banks'. I'm no gardening expert but it looks like some of the plants are likely to grow to 4-5 ft  thus

replacing our stone wall along the Strand with a 'green' wall instead! They've chosen to plant the tallest shrubs opposite the trees on the Lawn so when they grow taller they will probably 'meet' the lower branches. Also, none of the plants appear to have been watered since planting and at the car park end there are hardly any plants. Did they underestimate how many plants were needed? or did the job 'overun' and the contractors went to another job?

From the comments previously posted about the strand works, I feel it would have been extremely helpful for a detailed 'artist impression to have been published so none of us would have been wondering, 'its that it?' . It could have been put in the library, outside the tourist information office etc.

They're still working on it and I think it's generally shaping up well, although the plants do look like they could do with a good soaking.

So now we have hanging baskets and planted banks - how come, when I read here that the money had run out?  Does that mean the wooden rails will be replaced too?

The new plants are looking in a bit of a sorry state. I dont think that they were watered in that well, as by looking at them earlier, they need a damn good soaking.

Apparently it's scheduled to get two waterings a week for the next 6-8 weeks.   I don't pass often enough to know if that's happening but if not call the Teignbridge Open Spaces number on 215851.
