The new Butlins???

Dawlish is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful places in the country to live. It has the sea, the countryside, a historic railway, gorgeous old buildings, the lawn (a great community area), and the fantastic carnival, and lively youth. However, in recent years the town seems to be becoming a tacky holiday resort. Its great that Dawlish gets so many tourists but it seems we are selling our town short by becoming like one massive Butlins, and the town is at risk of losing its original charm. Well done to places like the old mill, deli delicious, and the brewery for keeping their integrity and offering the locals and the tourists a bit of culture rather then another Mr. Wippy.

Totally agree with you and know from many comments heard, there are lots more that do as well!
Let the ones that want tack, stay in Dawlish Warren. On the plus side we do have an Art Gallery, nice restaurant and smart cafe/bar in Queen Street so that's a start although much more needs to be done. The Strand with the traffic chaos and fumes for a start!

The tourists seen milling around Woolworths and Somerfield are the worst kind of ASBO scum.

Sweathogs who make their living by reproducing more midlands-spawn in order to get welfare benefits.

You forget that Dawlish is more than just a holiday destination. You're here for a couple of weeks. We're here all year round. This is our home town. People are just worried that Dawlish will turn into a place where a tourist is catered for, but not the locals.

Locals .. need to start supporting local .. you go out of town to shop.
If it wasnt for tourists Dawlish would die.
You live just for the pubs.

Look how gloomy it is in Winter .. nobody in the strert or along by the river .. why, where are you? ..ah away on holiday from Dawlish? hmmm you dare, just think, thay are probably pleased to see the back of you !

That seems to be an attack on me. I rarely use the pubs. Having a three year old puts paid to that. And I shop in the local butchers, grocers and bakery. I take my holiday in the kids summer holiday and am here for winter. There's a hell of a lot of people like that in Dawlish. I can walk down the Strand and say hello to at least ten people I know well. I would say I'm local - and proud of it.

No that is not attack on you.

It is for those who moan at people who come to Dawlish and yet have the nerve to go away on holiday themselves!!! At least when people arrive on holiday they are happy to be here. My goodness when they see these pages what do they think ? ..like the lady in London who holidays in Dawlish.
I still say the town would die without the tourists. What a fuss there would be for example if the train line had to close because of the sea.
Anyway why can't Dawlish share like other seaside towns do around the UK?, they are obsessed with the word .. 'outsiders', perhaps its because people in Devon are just born here and do not go anywhere.

We have gone a long way from the subject Butlins, when all there is an amusement arcade lol. The food shops and eating places represent the kind people want .. though it is 'chicken and egg'.

Unfortunately Dawlish is a downmarket town and is unlikely to change. Thats the sad reality.

Why don't you grockles go somewhere else on holiday?

I like to go to Bali and next year i'm camel-trekking through the Namib desert, - all thanks to the backhanders I make on planning permission applications.

Next time you go to Bali as a 'Baligrockle' ..it will save you money if you buy a one way single ticket.

I welcome visiters to the town otherwise it would just die. small busineses would have to close as a lot rely on the summer trade.

if you want the so called "grockles" to go else where on holiday, why are you? you just become a grockle in another country!! I Don't think you have a point at all and you should just leave dawlish and take you childish mentality with you.

I agree Katie.
Think maybe you misunderstood, he that moans about people holidaying here and called them crockles, he then goes off to Bali, so he is one. It is HE that should stay there.
For the best part ..its banging your head against a brick wall on this forum, yuu never get positive points.
I wish all the people that dislike Dawlish so much would just get and go.

what a shame just think for the ones that moan about dawlish, you live there and dont even know how lovely it is, you got a little haven, just for one hour of your time ,have a good look at were you live, and you dont have to go anywere, all the others have to take pot luck on there hoildays for 2 weeks every year, for the nice weather, and if lucky really nice people,

I was born here, I live here, know how lovely the town is. AND I shop locally. I do agree Dawlish needs tourist to survive but I also agree Dawlish is becoming to commercial and is at risk at becoming tacky.

I'm kinda thinking that it's not so much the town becoming tacky as it is that time is changing and the clientelle is reducing to the tracksuit nation of Wayne and Waynetta Slob?! Harrisons has always been there and so has the bingo.. unless anyone wants to rip it down and put a few more restaurants and bars there, change the campsites to hotel/appartment accomodation and vet in the clientelle to the hotels, there sadly won't be much hope.

I just feel that a few on here from dawlish thing they poo dont smell and that they are better that others get out more and see the world ..no you just sit in the same spot day in day out and grow horns....I must say that most of the people that we have met from dawlish are very nice but there is always a bad apple hey...

Precisely - they are Wayne and Waynetta Slobs. What an ugly, mongrel lot they are. Probably staying in caravans in Dawlish Warren, frantically reproducing to get more 'benefits'.

You wouldn't get Prince Harry and his aristo friends coming to Dawlish, like their visits to Cornwall.

Shame, because the presence of some upper-crust visitors might help property prices.

Is it fair to say I may have been miss read? I just thought that if you maintain a market, the clientele will be maintained! Perhaps we should take more pride over our businesses such as freshening up a paint job or some render?! Perhaps changing/freshening up the image of out eateries?! Perhaps starting with a boost in our own pride in our lively hood and serving with a smile and employing people that will do the same?! Perhaps the clientele may freshen up?!

This is ridiculous. There is nothing wrong with caravaning in Dawlish Warren, I have done it for 30 years, we go abroad as well but always make sure we visit Dawlish as well.
Even though i love the place I do find most of the locals very ignorant and miserable especially in Dawlish.
Bring it on I say
