Can anyone give me an honest opinion on moving to Dawlish from a small quiet riral village??
We would like to know as much as possible as we have 2 girls, what are the schools like?
Whats it like to get around in the grockle season? Is the new development definetly going to be built by Shutterton Way?? Info on food shopping, etc; (sorry to say that i wasn't impressed with the new co-op due to very limited stock although at least it's there)!
We would very much appreciate as many opinions as possible.
Thanks in advance!

i have lived in dawlish all my life and dont want to move, although dawlish is small and the ppl can be nosey you soon get 2 know alot of ppl which has its upsides as most ppl are friendly and look out 4 1 and other. the schools are all very good but as with most schools you do get moans frm time 2 time.
there is big shopping areas a train journey away. and a tescos not far which puts on a bus once a week or even better if you can drive.
there are certin neighbourhoods that are not so friendly so you need 2 pick carefully.

Dawlish used to be ok. It has now turned into a violent place to live. Their was only a stabbing a few months ago.

It jsut gets worse with all the youths. Seems to be break - ins most nights.

Sorry this is not to put you off, but it is VERY true. Try Newton abbot much nicer

THANKS TO ALL THAT HAVE REPLIED!! THAT ALONE GOES TO SHOW THAT YOU MUST BE THE TYPICAL FRIENDLY DEVON DUMPLINGS THAT WE ARE VERY USED TO (NO INSULT AS WE ARE DEVONIONS TOO. REGARDLESS OF STABBINGS AND STUFF WE HAVE READ IN THE NEWSPAPER RECENTLY...UNFORTUNATLY THATS SOCIETY TODAY..SOME PEOPLE FALL NATURALLY ALMOST DOWN THE WRONG ROADS!

HAVE THERE EVER BEEN ANY PROBLEMS WITH RESIDENTS AT THE BUTLER CLINIC? AS WE WOULD BE MOVING TO THE LITTLE WEEK GARDENS AREA? ANY INFO ABOUT THERE WOULD BE GOOD NEWS AS GONE ARE THE DAYS OF KNOCKING ON DOORS TO MEET YOUR PROSPECTIVE NEIGHBOURS!!!
WITH THANKS AGAIN IN ADVANCE!!

Dawlish has it's problems just like everywhere else. This is a relatively low crime town, not crime free - no where is. I have lived both here and at Newton Abbot and I would recommend Dawlish over Newton any day.

Despite some of the idiotic stuff you might read here, there is a genuine community spirit here, the schools are good, the faciilities whithin the town are improving and the area that you are planning to live in is a really nice one. Lots of children and families there. I wish you well with your move and hope you will be happy here.

What absolute rubbish you have written - break ins on most nights and a stabbing - how many stabbings have we had in the last 20 years?
You should be more wary of a Council that tells lies to the public.

Used to councils who tell lies, try living under East Devon Council....their policy...don't ask for anything..BUT you MUST psy us OTT Coucil Tax and get nothing back on return! Everywhere has probs, not too bothered about small amounts of crime...actually more concerned about coping with everyday life in height of 'grockle'season!!
Any more info??

Hiya, well having moved here about 4 years ago with my 2 girls I would say that Dawlish is a lovely place to bring up kids and the shops are fine for a small town. I will say that grockle season can be a bit of a nightmsre at times. it's no good if you want to get anywhere fast, on foot or by car. it can be a pain trying to walk down the Strand in a hurry as you normally have many whole families taking up the entire pavement and walking really slow. you know that "I'm on holiday" walk. it's okay if you don't mind walking in the road to get around people and long queues. When they all start making their way home it's really a very nice place to be.

Well I must say this post has been a very enlightening one for me. As a resident of Birmingham in the Midlands and a holiday maker to dawlish and the warren each year its nice to see how the real folk in Dawlish think and what really goes on. I have contemplated the move to dawlish as all holidaymakers must do but its a big move with three kids a wife pets and a business to relocate but never say never. As for crime surely you cant have crime like we have up here. You name it we have it....every day

Well i relocated to Dawlish from the North about 7 years ago and would recommend it to anyone!
To be honest if you're thinking of moving farther down Exeter Road i.e. Little Week Road area you won't really have that many problems with the 'grockels'. As previously stated in the Summer you may be forced off the pavement on the Strand by stressed mums with pushchairs, but out of town is mostly unaffected. As for getting anywhere else you quickly learn the routes on the back roads to get to Exeter / Torquay / Paignton etc :)
Even though there are a few idiots on this forum who think they are 'it' and can't string a sentence together, the kids in Dawlish are generally alright. Fair enough they hang around in large groups and skate down Marine Parade but lets face it, until the council provide more facilities there's bugger-all else for them to do (and in my opinion the skaters are courteous to motorists).
Hope your move goes well, sure you'll settle in just fine!
