Dawlish Discussion

Hi all,

Question, is unemployment an issue in Dawlish ?

We had some contractors in last week they had a labourer in for the day he came from Exmouth, was there no one locally available or willing ?

A conversation with the builders at Secamton, asking how many local people work there reply 1, I wonder why ?

I have asked around locally for someone to give me a hand with a couple of jobs (needs to be fit, quite strong, not scared of heights, building trade style work)

this week would have been 2 days, next week 2 days

Therefore

Employment levels good / bad ?

Easy to find work / hard ?

Probably varies throughout the year. As this is a tourist area there will be seasonal work March through to September/October.

The other mainstay of employment opportunities around here seems to be working in the care industry. Quite a few adverts in this week's Gazette from local nursing homes wanting care workers.

Its the same old situation in the area, majority of local employers only want to pay minimum wage for usually seasonal work. Therefore if your on benifits taking that sort of work is pointless. As for the care industry thats just a joke. Stupid hours, dreadfull working conditions and very little money.

Unfortunately Dawlish is an employment black hole, no proper jobs with decent wages and a bunch of cowboy employers trying to take advantage.

Answer - commute to Plymouth or Bristol

Fo the sort of work you are wanting help with Andy, you should have asked in the Legion, if you have been up there.

Somebody should know someone for sure, or a member themself might be able to help and have the necessary skills to assist you.

Carer, thats a good idea, I'd asked in the pub where I drink but no luck, I will go to the legion and ask about.

I think you'll find local labourers/builders are travelling quite a way to get work that lasts more than a day here and there.  They commit themselves to this type of work for obvious reasons which means fewer people are available locally.

There was an Odd Job Man add in last weeks Gazette.

Once you find a tradesman in Dawlish stick with him/her! They are hard to come by and do work the whole area to give them enough hours.

I can recommend people to you Andy (i.e. the ones we use at Red Devon Housing) such as plumber, sparky, general builder/chippy/all round good guy, carpet/flooring fitter and they're all local (i.e. Dawlish/Teignmouth) blokes.

I took carers advice went down the legion (star cross) and found someone within 10 minutes, thank you carer

Whats that saying can't see the wood for the trees, it was definately a case of that for me.
