Dawlish Discussion

Hi all,

Question is Dawlish a nice place to live and work or not??????

On here their seems to be a lot of negative posts, issues relating to benefits, taxes, shops closing, council getting it right or wrong.

Then their seems to be a lot of community involvement.

We are looking to move to Dawlish, we are a fairly active family, therefore join a number of local clubs.

After viewing the posts on this site we are rather concerned that we are considering moving to an unhappy community.

Please help, tell us what life in Dawlish is like

Like anywhere, it has it's ups and downs, rights and wrongs, but on the whole, it's a lovely place to live.

Jobs (full time) though are a problem but Exeter is only a short distance away where a lot of people work.

IMO, road and rail links are good and public transport ok also.

Great area for walking/cycling/letterboxing etc, and the social life is good, with a variety of pubs and clubs which include the Royal british Legion, RAFA, and Con Club.

I returned to the UK last year from NZ and have settled in Dawlish, and SO GLAD I did

Granted, that many posts on here are moans & groans, but hey isn't that usual? If you look closely at these moans, it's over trivial stuff really eg parking etc. What you don't see is articles over any high crime rate, druggies everywhere, gang warfare etc etc

Not saying its Utopia, but If you want a wonderful place to bring up a family, where pursuits are many, a place that is a jewel of an English seaside town without the tackiness of Blackpooll etc, where problems are minor compared to the cities, where people generally are polite & friendly ......

Then DAWLISH IS THE PLACE to be!!

We don't really need jobs as we are buying a place with an income already, we thought maybe we would do some work probably not full time anyway.

Thanks, "hey isn't that usual" not to us, and not in our circle of friends, we currently live in a sleepy village in Worcestershire.

This may be a bit late, but I noticed LLoyds are closing one of their shops soon

@Andysport, about 13,000 people live in dawlish, whilst only a dozen or so people regularly post on here. as is the case throughout the country, people are quick to moan but usually very slow to praise. 

Dawlish has a lot to commend it, so please do not be put off by the 0.001% who have nothing better to do than moan on here about often ridiculously inane matters. 

Dawlish is a very pretty town with the sea and lawn area.  Very quiet and dull in the winter. As you say you have spotted the negatvity of people, I put up with it for 7 years, think that is the actual average move time anyway. It helps if you were born there... I was not lol.

I wasnt born here and have lived here for 26yrs no intention of leaving, LOVE IT here

Wondering - oops, sorry to hear it didn't work out for you (theirs a saying you get what you give = well we are huge givers so hopefully that may help us and with luck, help and forgiveness maybe Dawlish might accept us) good luck for you in the future hope it works out for you (worcestershire is a fantastic place full of extremely positive (or misled) people).

Brazilnut - nice user name = thanks i've been in Worcestershire for 26 years love the place, the people everything really (only reason we are moving is we have sold our business) we need to move area to disassociate ourselves from our business.

We are surprised at the amount of clubs in the area

Clubs we are looking at

Starcross sailing club

Dawlish camera club

Running club (coasters)

Swimming club (adult & junior)

Life saving club (junior)

Cycle club (10 miles up the road) unless someone knows of a nearer one

Is their a sea cadets (junior)

Is their kayak (junior)

Badminton (can't find club)

Son also likes cricket if theirs a club

As a quick question i'm a tight northerner and we need a B&B to stay in Friday night family room 2+1 cheap as chips would be good any suggestions??

Also we will be eating out Friday night (would prefer very very light meal, we like chefs that will maybe cook something off the menu or a rare fish) any suggestions ??

I do believe that Dawlish Royal British Legion have a photography section. You may have to pay for legion membership (£17approx PA) but thats all.

I know they had an exhibition back in April in aid of the Poppy Appeal. Hope the links work.

Can't find sea cadets

Have found Badminton at 8pm Tuesdays, does anyone know what kind of ability they are ????? is their a group that plays during the day ????????

RE: Andysport.Yes Dawlish Is a nice place.I have been coming here on my holidays since I was 16 and I am now 53.Well, will be on Sunday. I have enjoyed my time here and there are good train services to Exeter,Plymouth(change at Newton Abbott).Where at both places you can do shopping,go horse racing at Newton Abbott,course not far from Station.And like me If I get a job here or In Exeter I will definately be living here.Not forgetting beautiful scenery. You cannot get In my view any better than Dawlish.  

Further to what Stephen15 above says, there is a Point 2 Point course close by near Mamhead.

Season is closed now but the first meeting is generally the last Sunday in November.

Camera club = probably force myself to go in and have a beer and a chat (it's for the wife that one, so a good excuse for a beer)

Dawlish have got badminton, but what level do Broadmeadow play and what night ?

We have made contact with surf lifesaving today

We went to see schools Friday, it's all getting quite exciting now = we met some really nice people

We need to buy a static caravan for temporary living, anybody got suggestions please ??????????

If anyone is interested, our take on shops closing is they probably just need to change a little to cater for an ever changing market, local people just need to occassionally not go to saainsburys, personally i don't do big shops but thats only because we eat fresh food as much as possible.

I will not pay for parking at all, so if it's free i will stop if it's not i'll go without.

We parked outside Loonies (pub by bike shop) and walked therefore taking in the upper shops as well.

Went into tourist information the only restaurants recommended where in Teighnmouth none in Dawlish (why ??)

Tourist Disinformation more like. Gurka's, Ten Green Bottles, Jack Spratts, Witches Bowl, the eat-in Chinese on Brunswick Place are all heartily recommended. 

There's no such pub as Loonies.
