Dawlish Discussion

Hi guys,

Me the newbie again.  Currently hoping to move to Dawlish Sat 23 June (fingers crossed).  Whichever flat I do end up renting, it is likely to be unfurnished and I will need to get it furnished during the week Mon 25 June - Friday 29 June before starting my new job on Mon 2 July.

Do you guys have any knowledge about small independent electrical retailers, or low cost furniture shops (or second hand shops) around Dawlish, Teignmouth or Newton Abbot?

Other than the BHF "Furniture & Electrical" stores which I am already aware of and Dawlish auctions (which I won't be able to make use of, as Sat 23 June I will be travelling 215 miles and by Sat 30 June I will really need to have the flat kitted out before I start my new job).

Any other local independent shops?

'REFURNISH', Brunel Road, Newton Abbot take in unwanted furniture and, as the name suggests, refurnishes it and sells on to low-income families/people. They have some good stuff there quite often. Try Sampsons in Park Road, Dawlish as a small independent electrical store. It's also worth going on 'Eyes of Dawlish' Facebook page as people are often giving stuff away on there.

Everything -- double bed, wardrobe, drawers, sofa, table and chairs, fridge/freezer, cooker and washing machine.

The flat is TOTALLY unfurnished with no white goods.

I do have a few items in my current London flat (bed, desk and a few bookcases) but I won't be able to bring them with me due to needing to travel light.  Also my current bed is a few years old and a bit worn, so I was looking forward to buying a new one anyway.

Dawlish auctions are happy to accept an (acceptable!) offer prior to auction. Well worth popping in and checking them out. I was in a similar position, and they were a great help.

In my current area of London I have used Greenwich auctions a few times (whcih is also a Saturday morning auction) and had to wait until the following Monday or Tuesday to have things delivered .... I had never tried turning up early and making an offer !!

Hello, I did the same thing as you and moved down here from the big smoke (no regrets!). The best place for bargains is Marsh Barton car boot sale on a Sunday morning which has a good mix of private and business sellers. I think half the furniture in my house came from there! Of course you will find some junk there too, but well worth a peek as some people give stuff away for free at closing time because they don't wish to take it home. I have also snapped up some bargains on ebay like fridges, freezers and bookcases. If you do a local search for 'collection only' items that you are after (such as fridges etc) then you may find a bargain or two on your doorstep. There is a second hand furniture dealer on ebay who operates from Dawlish and I believe he delivers for a small fee. If you are looking for cheap, new bedding, curtains and bits of furniture that can be delivered to your new home then I recommend halfcost.co.uk as I have picked up some lovely bits and bobs there for good money. Again it is a bit of potluck as to what they have in stock but that is half the fun of it I suppose. Teignmouth and Newton Abbot have a good selection of second hand shops that are worth a browse, and some have furniture available for sale. Good luck with the move.

The Brainwave Charity Shop in Piermont Place opposite the Dawlish Railway Station has always got a good selection of donated furniture (wardrobes, wall units, beds & mattresses, tables & chairs) plus bed linen and curtains.

You could give them a call 01626 438151 between 9am - 5pm and I'm sure they could source good furniture items at reasonable prices.

The British Heart Foundation has electricals in their Newton Abbot shop.

Fingers and toes crossed I sign the lease on the flat tomorrow (am staying in Devon in a hotel for a few days) then move from London this weekend (Sat 23rd) .... and then from Sat pm / Sunday 24th I will properly become a "Dawlisher" .... (is that the correct terminology? LOL!)

Very excited + so looking forward to escaping the rat race and coming to live near the sea !!!
