From the gazette Pledge as beach fails to reach gold level Wednesday, 09 May 2012 by Nigel Canham Urgent action is being sought to safeguard Dawlish’s reputation as a safe family resort after a national charity refused to recommend Town Beach to tourists. Council officials and South West Water have pledged to clean up their acts after the Marine Conservation Society did not include the attraction in its 2012 Good Beach Guide. It said water quality did not make the ‘gold standard’ because of contaminants such as salmonella and faecal streptococci. Although much of the talk has focused on the Tuck’s Plot pumping station, fat from restaurants and cafes, as well as the problem of syringes, nappies and other material being flushed down toilets, the emphasis has now shifted to the waterfowl enclosure. It's an outrage that south west water have created this situation. I have watched, for over a year, the weekly attendance of a crane to clear out the pump that obviously isn't man enough for the task, yet SWW try to blame the increase in tourists for extra waste that is created. The councils of Teignbridge and Dawlish should take immediate legal action against SWW because the next thing that will happen will be the closure of the beach because of failed EEC water regulation tests. And somehow they manage to retain their status as the most expensive water company in the country. Their management should be sacked, let alone awarded extreme bonuses.
