The heavenly scent of pinks grown in the Westcountry greeted TV presenter Angela Rippon at the preview day of the Chelsea Flower Show yesterday, writes Sarah Pitt.

Angela, an ambassador for the Alzheimer's Society, was presented with Memories, a new scented variety bred at Whetman Pinks in Dawlish in South Devon.

It has been shortlisted for "plant of the year" at the flagship Royal Horticultural Show in central London, which opens to the public today and runs until Saturday

Nursery owners Carolyn and Edward Bourne are donating the royalties from the variety to the charity.
