Dawlish Discussion

This subject has been talked about many times - but this town really needs a Wetherspoons type establishment.

They are keen to target smaller towns and have ambitious plans to have 1600 outlets throughout the UK - they already have massively successful pubs in towns much smaller than Dawlish.

A decent pub is what this town needs and somewhere decent to eat to. Wetherspoons plans have alarmed local landlords and cafe owners - BUT GREAT - about time! Competition is great for the customer - cheap drinks and great food - a winner for sure for this failing town!!!

Love Wetherpoons, great concept, frequent when I am in "the city" BUT ....... WE DON'T NEED THEM in Dawlish !! Yes they employ, but so do the local eateries and they keep the money local. Wetherspoons profits go straight to head office. Local pubs are terrific places, great atmosphere, great service (for the most part) and reflect the small town feeling that Dawlish NEEDS to maintain

A Wetherspoons would be fantastic for the local economy! We should welcome new business and investment in Dawlish and yes we should be mindful of the potential impact on local residents and traders - but it has been proven that competition and choice can be a great thing! It would be great to see such a big player in the pub industry put its faith in Dawlish in such challenging times.

Wetherspoons have a proven track record of making a positive mark in the towns and communities they serve and they create proper jobs to boost local employment. On average Wetherspoons pump around £1 million in to the local economy when it opens new pubs by using workers from local suppliers and on average employs 30 - 40 local people, they use local suppliers for its produce and they always source local ales. FANTASTIC FOR LOCAL ECONOMY!

Wetherspoons has a proven track record of supporting local causes and pumping money into the towns they serve - obviously they make profits that go to head offices - but who doesnt?

The small town feeling of Dawlish has been lost - lost many years ago! Sainsburys has hopefully started a positive move forward to take this town into the 21st Century a drag it out of the dark ages!! Many of the local eateries close down out of season and do not provide jobs all year round and do not support the local economy all year round - if they support it at all??

I think this could be good for Dawlish as monkeyboy says , there prices for food and ales are brilliant and whenever I visit elsewhere always look for a Wetherspoons. Does the owner not come from Exeter so he knows the problems we face down here. The only place I can think feasable tho is the old Sunburnt Arms site in Dawlish Warren

Great idea. Close down Harrison's Amusements and open a Wetherspoons in it's place.

The founder of Wetherspoons - Tim Martin - is from Ireland, but he has been known to frequent his pubs down here!

the local pubs would be quaking in their shoes, and who could blame them, but as people keep pointing out competition is good

About time the local pubs were left quaking in their shoes! Sub standard pubs & cafes need a good bit of healthy competition!

Wetherspoons in Dawlish gets my vote!

Just heard Wetherspoons are looking for site in Teignmouth - so doubt we will get one in Dawlish now! Be interesting to see where they end up in Teignmouth? Suppose we will just have to put up with the pathetic selection of pubs we have in Dawlish or go to Teignmouth - i know where i will be going!

South Pacific was up for sale last time I looked

Just to add a little note here, Whetherspoons rarely buy existing pubs. They make more money by buying ex banks or cinemas etc. then turning them into pubs, thereby increasing the value of a property nobody wanted

South Pacific is far too small for a Wetherspoons, the acquisitions team already have a few venues/locations in mind - be interesting to see what occurrs!

Any chance they might be interested in buying 34 Park Road? It's still on the market. They might get a bargain.

That would indeed have been the temporary location of the present town council had the previous town council had its way.

The town could really use a quality hotel however as a plan B replacing Harrisons amusements with a non Lloyds Wetherspoons sounds a good second bet.
