i would just like to point out that STOKES now opens on a sunday from 10am to 4 pm. i think this is great as you can shop for fresh food on sundays, and of course the parking is 100 times better, i just hope other shops will start to do the same.

Interesting you say that parking on Sundays is 100 times better than weekdays when people on here keep going on about free parking being needed to get motorists into the Strand. Free parking in streets where there is hardly a parking space available seems a strange idea to me.

Its 70p minimum in the Strand Sunday the only day I dont bother. I dont mind paying 40p for the convenience but draw the line at 70p. Anyway I have 6days to shop why bother on a Sun

Well done to Stokes for taking POSITIVE action. Really hope that it proves to be a success for you and that other traders follow suit. Not everyone is lucky enough to always be able to shop Mon to Sat!!!

You have late night opening all week, Sainsburys where you shop Nelson is open 7am-9pm Mon- Sat

Costcutters is open late everyday, One Stop is as well, Im not knocking Stokes good on them if it keeps people in town GOOD, I was talking from my own point of view, if I need anything on a Sun I visit the corner shop. I personally would like to go back to the days when shops were not open on a Sun and let people have some quality family time !!!! Only my opinion

I'm missing something here obviously.

Please can someone explain why, if people are shopping at Sainsbury's instead of in the town Mon- Sat, why they will suddenly switch to shopping in the town on Sundays when Sainsbury's is also open on Sundays.

No Lynne if they like Sainsburys they will still go there on Sundays. The point I was trying to make is that it is 70p to park in the Strand on Sundays for up to 1hr, Mon-Sat 40p for half hour, so can you see what difference it will make. Anyway Stokes always opens Sundays from Easter

@Brazilnut. do you get a staff discount at the co-op? i'd hope so given how much advertising you give your employers!!!!! i enjoy strolling around town on a sunday. i enjoy having the choice of being able to pop into 'local' shops to browse and/or buy. i also enjoy getting home from work during the week, and purting my feet up. not all of us are oaps with nothing better to do all day!!! and to think that you, as the champion of britain's most expensive pavement, is criticising stokes for trying to turn the tide of what has clearly been years of decay and complacency/procrastination. tut-tut. shame on you.

No 1 I DO NOT WORK FOR THE COOP

No 2 I am not criticising Stokes, good luck to them

No 3 I am having a dig at you

No 4 A lot of people shop on their way home from work whether its in Dawlish or elsewhere

No 5 Its just that you try to big up everything the majority of food shops in the Strand open on Sun from Easter to October anyway

And you are entitled to your opinion the same as I am

A lot of people shop on Sundays too! In the middle of similarly sized towns around the country!!! Free weekend parking IN THE CAR PARKS is whats needed, not free parking next the most expensive pavement in Britain. In my opinion.

Yes Nelson, exactly right. I personally refuse to shop on a Sunday but that's my choice, no one is forced to go to Sainsburys or anywhere else on Sundays. And free parking in the streets would mean residents parking up all weekend so blocking parking for weekend visitors and shoppers alike, as indeed is what happened years ago. When Stokes came to Dawlish there were three other Greengrocers, all closed down within 18 months due to Stokes cut prices which rapidly went up when they were the only veg shop remaining, now people feel sorry for Stokes having competition from Sainsburys, nonsense. No matter how long you spend shopping in the Strand you still need to go elsewhere eg Sainsburys, to buy most of what you need so why not go there in the first place and get everything.

Imagining that the Strand will become a 'shopping mecca' because the cost of parking there is reduced by 40p is utter nonsense. The world has changed, 99% of people prefer to go to a proper shopping centre where they can park nearby and buy everything they need.

High streets all over the Country are dying, why, because nobody uses them and free parking ain't gonna change that.

There's FREE parking in Barton Hill car park on Sundays until the end of March. Combine your shopping with a stroll along The Brook.

Well done Stokes, I wish you well. I find it handy when Stokes and Maunders are open Sundays as I'd rather walk to them from home than drive to Sainsburys. In fact, I rarely go to Sainsburys as I get much better and tastier meat and veg at Maunders and Stokes.

Wrigger - " you still need to go elsewhere eg Sainsburys, to buy most of what you need so why not go there in the first place and get everything." Not true, I very rarely use Supermarkets, have done all my shopping in Dawlish for the last 6 years.

Is the Co-op not classed as a supermarket?
