at last a cosy intimate restaurant in Dawlish and it opens in the evening. We had a lovely meal there. The new owners are very friendly. Dawlish could do with more of these and get rid of the awful grubby looking canteen type restaurants that belong to the 60's. Most visitors and locals are after more upmarket cafes/restaurants these days.

That is partly their problem! Visitors don't seem to venture beyond the Strand. Go up the Strand to the Wee Shop Bakery. (Cafe 1 is on the opposite corner.) Turn right into Queen Street. The Witches Bowl is about 40 yards up on the left.

Thanks for that, but I had found it on a street map. Its not that I don't explore the town when visiting, just that I can't remember street names that well!!
It will happen to you as you get older!!

No, you are wrong in your assumption. I have eaten at both establishments as a genuine customer with no bias towards either. The Witches Bowl in my opinion is more intimate and more special for a romantic dinner for two. For families then the Ugly Duckling may be better as it does burgers and most things with chips. I have found both friendly and good service. At the end of the day it depends on what atmosphere you are after. What we do need in Dawlish is more choice of classier places to eat.
