We should invite Tesco to open a similar store in Dawlish as it would provide more of the above.
With many town shops closing the extra employment will be desperately needed.
Plus Sainsbury's is so packed on Saturdays, having an alternative store would ease crowding.

Just a reminder - it was but less than a year ago that the Tesco Appeal to build another supermarket here was thrown out by the planning inspector.
Is 007 on the wind up?? Yes to Sainsbury, no to Tesco. Although a Tesco Express on the Strand might be an idea!!!

How can a few little shops in town be better than having another store like Sainsbury's. It is so good now that we have Sainsbury's, should've been done many years ago.

Sainsburys and Asda are very 'selective' and so they should be.
and to think, of course, that Teignmouth are going to have to go through all this in a year or so - and they're already pedestrianised !
I was going to say I would have preferred a Tesco to Sainsbury, but not if they have grumpy staff. I always found the staff at the Exeter Rydon Lane store quite friendly.
Maybe Steve they are ok in Exeter Rydon, I have never been there. I noted (3 yrs ago tho) at Newton Tesco the checkout staff make you feel you are bit of a nuisance being there. I think Tesco is the clever one though with adverts ..you think you will get a bargain if you go there. They have just had their worst trading figures for years.
I do know Asda are very particular on staff and I am sure the same is with Sainsburys. To work at Asda you actually test run the job for about 30 minutes, to see if its good for you and them!
On Supermarket prices..I have to say when I was in Sainsburys ..a jacket potato cost me 45p!!! ..was bit of a shock on the checkout slip. Normally I buy at Stokes for 29p for same size. Convenience shopping in all supermarkets with cost particularly in the veg department ..but then it always has..

Regarding grumpy staff, there is good and bad at all supermarkets, most staff have name badges if you are not happy with the way you have been treated complain in writing to the store manager concerned not generalising on here !!!

Tesco is better than Sainsbury's, everything is just done slightly better, so the overall effect is noticeable.

Just been to Sainbury's to get beer for the rugby later on. So very packed it was horrendous. Be great to have another store to ease overcrowding on weekends.

I saw the police were loitering with intent at Sainsburys today.
The queues at Co-op weren't quiet!! How much did their check-out tills cost? You know, the ones that are never used? I popped into town this morning before starting my shift this afternoon and was sad to see that Bitz n Bobs is closing down. No complaints from the proprietor about Sainsbury though - just about the economy in general.
I overheard this anti Sainsbury conversation when I was in the town yesterday - made me smile.
A couple were talking to a shop assistant about how they had been in Sainsburys and decided that as they would be busy that evening and they were short of time that they would buy a fish pie for their tea instead of making something. However, could they find a fish pie in Sainsbury's no they could not! Call themselves a supermarket? etc etc etc.
(For future reference should there be anyone else in search of fish pies in Sainbury's reading this - the fish pies can be found in the frozen food aisle and I know that because..........well, I'm sure you can figure that our for yourselves).
What I don't understand is why didn't they ask someone? I'm sure the people serving on the fish counter would have known where the fish pies are kept.
Non-frozen fish pies can be found in the refrigerated seafood section opposite the wet fish counter. Alternatively, it would be just as quick to buy the ingredients for a fish pie and make it ones self. The mixed fish chunks are handily located in the refrigerated fish section AND at the wet fish counter, whilst ready-made Maris Piper mash can be found on the veg aisle. Just add milk, a bay leaf and maybe some nutmeg and grated celery and/or carrot. Grate some cheese on top of the mash for a golden finish. That's what I call Customer Service excellence - I should apply for a job at Sainsbury's as their 'cooking ambassador'. I said, cooking.
About time we had a Lidl nearby, re veg prices, it's easy to be selective but many veg at Sainsburys is half the price per kilo compared with Stokes, and fruit prices, especially grapes!!!
Also a lot of people don't look at the per kilo price.
You can pay silly prices at Sainsburys, their bananas are 68p a kilo, if you buy a pre-packed £1 bag of the same bananas (weigh the bag) you will find they are almost £3 a kilo. Re the comment above about potato price, what was the weight of the potato and the price per kilo??? what type of potato? Even at Sainsburys Brocolli is £2 a kilo loose or over £3 a kilo for the same stuff if shrink wrapped.
You can't compare prices by taking one item on one day then saying the whole shop is cheaper or dearer than another one.

Why on earth would anyone ask a question like that?!!!! There are no end of strange people about. The vast majority of employees are locals, not that its any business of williamcat1.
Shock, horror, an 'outsider' working at Dawlish Sainsburys, should be sacked. All Dawlish residents who work at Asda in Newton Abbot should be immediately dismissed, and Dawlish residents working in Exeter, appalling.
i caught the bus back from NA the other week. When I got on it so did someone wearing a fleece with a Wilkinson's logo on it. Guess he'd just finished his shift. Anyhow when I got off the bus by the Marine Garage he was still on it. Wonder where he lives?
Went to sainsbury on saturday to buy some bacon only to find Danish on offer but no British back bacon at all. Asked at customer serevice to be told I wasnt the first to notice it. On another point of grumpy staff dont over 50% of staff at Dawlish store liev in Dawlish.
Wanted to buy some lamb last weekend but they only had New Zealand. So didn't buy it.
If enough of us don't buy the non British products (or products that have had to be flown half way around the world to get here) in any of the supermarkets (or any independent shops for that matter) and if we also make a point of asking them to stock more local and/or British products do you think they might take some notice?
In other words - if we buy what they put on their shelves then they'll just go on offering it to us.
If we vote with our purses they might take some notice.
And let's not forget that just along the road a bit from Sainsbury's is our very own pork farm.

I agree with you on most of that Lynne, but Ive been buying New Zealand lamb since the 60s when I can get it, it was always part of the Commonwealth agreement and as they still are I personally have no objection, besides it is cheaper than English

I wasnt agreeing that Sainsburys is great for Dawlish!!!! I was commenting on buying British, Ive only been to Sainsburys on a few occasions, always shop in the Town and will continue to do so 007, the Coop has New Zealand Lamb at half price excellent value for money, Lloyd Maunders have a lot of special offers too and most is locally sourced along with Stokes, Ryders and Wee Shop bakery have excellent products as well so why do I need to trek all the way out to Sainsburys!!! wait until the holiday season starts and Sainsburys cant keep up with demand
If Tesco start building a store now I doubt it would open to help during this sumer. But at least it would help keep up with demand in subsequent years.

Brazilnut, I and many others want another store as Sainsbury's is too busy on the weekend and you have mentioned yourself about the demand on shops during the holiday season.
Therefore Dawlish should have at least a Sainsbury's, a Tesco, and a Lidi store.
Just because you don't want that, doesn't mean it should not or will not happen. If someone disagrees with your very narrowminded views you try to put them down.

Its obvious Dawlish does not need another store, just because its busy on a Sat that is not reason enough. I have nothing against Sainsburys its my choice to shop where I wish same as you, but we do not need to flood the area!!!! Tescos still run their free bus and I see quite a few people getting on it. People I know still go to Asda because of their prices. A lot of people work in Exeter and shop there before coming home, we all coped with shopping before Sainsburys arrived in Dawlish. You seem to take great delight in winding people up on here
As a footnote Ive been told Sainsburys already have permission to extend, so if it gets too small for Dawlish it can expand!! Like the 11 industrial units it is supposed to be building!!
Well that's a change, a few months ago we were getting comments that Sainsburys would be closing down when the Holidaymakers left, now it seems they won't be able to cope when the Holidaymakers arrive!!!!! Sainsburys has been a roaring success and when they get busy in the Summer and at Xmas they simply get more deliveries. A modern retailer gets deliveries based on DEMAND, not x loaves of bread every day and I'm sure Sainsburys won't be complaining about being swamped with customers during the Summer. We really need another big Supermarket in that area and a Lidl would also be very welcome.
Lamb, I always buy New Zealand as it is the best value for money, especially with the recent offers at Sainburys on New Zealand Lamb.

I know I've said it before but I'll say it again. Tesco's Appeal to build a supermarket at Ladys Mile was thrown out by the planning inspector less than a year ago.
What has changed from that time to this to make the likelihood of another supermarket acceptable in terms of planning policy?
There will be another new supermarket soon enough - Morrisons in Teignmouth.
wriggler supermarkets have to do their bread orders 48hrs in advance, thats why sometimes its difficult to estimate supply and demand, oh and all other orders are also done days in advance. You cant just ring up at midday and say I need more bread!!!
Well the planners were wrong to block the Tesco plan.
