Pointless nobody takes any notice

After attending the Core Strategy meeting held on January 24 to discuss proposals for the development of the local area over the next 20 years, I feel I now have an understanding of how Teignbridge intends to enhance the gateway into Dawlish.
1 Build an industrial estate opposite Sainsbury’s adjacent to a new housing development (Secmaton Lane). Who wouldn’t want to live near lorries and vans making deliveries at all times of the day and night?
2 Don’t refurbish Shutterton Industrial Estate as its cheaper to build a new one. Not my thoughts but those of Simon Thornley, service manager spatial planning, Teignbridge.
3 Don’t pursue the planning consent agreed with the developer of Sainsbury’s to build industrial units behind the supermarket within nine months of store opening. The road is in place, yet the site remains empty.
4 Allow future developers given permission to build industrial units to change these to housing at a later stage, on the basis that in the present economic climate there is little demand for such units (as seems to be happening at the Sainsbury’s site).
5 Permit the building of 350 new homes off Shutterton Lane. This, together with the substitute houses above (item 4), would mean continuous housing all the way to Dawlish Warren with no green barrier.
6 Allow the Lady’s Mile mobile home display site to degenerate into an eyesore. Having chopped down all the mature trees and covered the original grass verge with gravel, the site has become incredibly unsightly.
All this seems to me a strange way to enhance tourism and attract new business. Some gateway.

Mr T Davies, of Charlton House, Eastcliff Road, Dawlish, writes:
Having been to the revitalise Teignbridge exhibition in The Strand and hearing a lot of objections to the scheme, I felt angry enough to put pen to paper for the other side.
I have lived in the Dawlish area for about ten years, moving from Exeer with my wife and son and consider ourselves fully integrated into the community. We live in a two-bed housing association flat, the rent is reasonable, the conditions poor.
I was made redundant some three years ago, having previously never been unemployed. I have managed to find some agency and part time work but nothing permanent.
My wife now works nearly full time to keep us afloat. We live from week to week and do not claim any benefits, although we are entitled to.
Now we say to anyone who is opposed to bringing jobs and cheaper housing to Dawlish – swap with us for six months and see how you cope.
Nimbyism is a word I do not like, but some people forget their houses and businesses may originally have been built on green fields.
I would not like to live anywhere other than the Dawlish area. The town is dying on its feet. Road and rail links must be improved, housing upgraded and light industries attracted before it is too late.
I know Mr Davies is writing about the Teignbridge Plan BUT why on earth is he not claiming the benefits to which he is entitled? It is not chairty money, there is no stigma atached to claiming (at least there shouldn't be), but, more importantly, Mr Davies has paid for it through his tax and NI over his working years. It seems utterly ridiculous to cut off his nose to spite his face....

If you'd gone along to the meeting you could have asked them yourself!
Never mind though. There are other meetings planned over the next 10 days. Take a look at the top posting. Perhaps you could get yourself along to one of them? They are, after all, public meetings where those with varying and differing views on all of this can get to air those views and in turn listen to what others, with differing points of views, have to say.
Unfortunately, on the date of the next NIMBY party I'll be mostly sticking forks in my eyes. Spending time in the conpany of hypocritical mentalist dinosaurs is not my idea of a night out. Thanks for the offer though.

So you admit that you've come on here just to get a reaction? How sad is your life. For your information, not a drop has passed my lips, other than blackcurrant cordial. If you lived in Dawlish, you might see me doing my 5 mile run every Mon, Wed and Fri evening after work - and any fool knows that alcohol and exercise don't mix. Peace out and goodnight.
