January's Town Council Meeting (Dawlish) should kill the shops in The Strand quite nicely, well done the council, lots of thought went into this decision

How & who will monitor the 30 minutes free in The Brunswick, also before 10 am and after 4 pm in The Strand.

No mention of traffic congestion in Plantation Terrace

Can teignbridge stand the loss of income from Pay & Display and PCN's

196 Strand Enhancement Project

Having received a report by Cllr Vickery, members considered its response to the Final Consultation by DCC on the options for enhancement of The Strand.

After discussion it was RESOLVED unanimously by those members present and voting to support a ‘hybrid’ scheme whereby:

· Pedestrianisation is applied during the middle hours of the day, but relaxed before 10am and after 4pm to allow access for deliveries and for people to stop in a limited number of on-street parking places for shopping.

· During the middle hours (10am to 4pm, say) access is only available to local town bus service and emergency vehicles.

· Public transport is to be encouraged as much as possible.

· The wall is removed and replaced by railings or similar traffic safety barrier.

· Circulation around the town rests on inward access by Brunswick Terrace and outbound by High Street and John Nash Drive.

· On-street parking on Brunswick Terrace be free for 30 minutes and limited to one hour, encouraging long stay parking in Barton Hill car park.

· Traffic movement within central Dawlish be restricted to 20mph

meant to have added to the above Traffic chaos going up Queen Street and across the flow of traffic coming from Park Road to turn right into High St, Barton Terrace will become a nightmare as will Oak Hill which is bad enough now!!!!! Voices for Dawlish you are prats thanks a lot, I thought you were here to listen to people, since in power havnt noticed much listening

Id like to know how many councillors were present when this vote was taken!!!!!

FANTASTIC! This is excellent news, especially the 30 minutes free parking on the Brunswick (which will be monitored by traffic wardens just as they do now). It'll brighten up The Strand and make shopping a pleasant experience, which will encourage more people to use the shops. And the council won't loose out from parking charges cos how many of us pay now if we're just popping into the odd shop? And you still have access before 10 and after 4.

You wont have to worry about a pleasant shopping experience because there wont be any shops, and nobody will visit because of the traffic chaos!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've kept quiet on this issue until now (most unusual for me I admit) but given that the above is what has been recommended may I express my concern that the local shopper bus will still be travelling along the Strand during its 'pedestrianised' time.

By definition it isn't a pedestrianised area if vehicles are allowed access. Emergency vehicles are different as they can make a lot of noise to make people aware of their presence and they wouldn't use the Strand that often anyway.

A bus however, regularly travelling along an area which visitors would understandably think is a vehicle free one, is an accident just waiting to happen. We, the people who live here, may be aware that the bus will come along but holidaymakers? I don't think so.

I have been reminded that Coop do free home delivery if you spend over £25 and a small charge if its less than that. Also if Stokes survive they are also doing a delivery service for orders over £10

Lynne I agree and I presume that means taxis as well as are they not public transport!!!!

Where is Brunswick Terrace? I have lived in Dawlish most of my life and have never heard of Brunswick Terrace.

I really couldn't care less, now we have Sainsburys nearby. They will have a big smile on their face now that the Council is pushing people their way.

It is going to be quite a sight to see all the traffic that currently turns of Exeter Road and goes up the High Street now coming into Dawlish, up Brunswick Place and up Queeen Street.

AHHHHHHHHH, Now I understand, the idea is to bring several hundred extra motorists a day into Dawlish so they can shop in the pedestrianised area, shops will then be busy.

Brilliant plan, now I understand, it has my full support. Well done Council.

Lynne.... Only 6 buses go through the Strand in a day, one an hour betweem 930 and 2.30...should not cause much problem

The new plans will make the Strand a pleasant place.to be.. at long last!!!

Oddly enough the fact that relatively few buses will be going along the Strand is what makes it, in my opinion, even more dangerous. Because it will not be a relatively frequent occurence it will mean that their hourly presence will not register in people's minds - if it registers at all.

A pedestrianised area that has a bus running along it (albeit hourly) is not, I feel, a safe area at all. Children running about, the elderly not able to move about so quickly. Holiday crowds. Like I said, I see accidents just waiting to happen.

I agree that the Strand needs to be a much more pleasant place to be and that these plans will hopefully achieve that. But no shopper bus going through it please. Why can't it stop to pick up/drop off passengers either end of the Strand?

Oh just another thought, before you can park in the Bartons Car Park you will have to negotiate the Viaduct area which everybody knows is a bottle neck in the summer, now with this plan you will no longer have access through High St so no alternative but to go to this area!!!! with all the traffic lights frustration and traffic jams along Exeter Road and Teignmouth Hill

Lynne ..suggest to DCC Transport dept that is serves the High Street and not The Strand that would be no problem, I cant see though how it could stop on the sharp bend at the Strand so people would need to walk from the seafront stops. That would be ok as bus people do walk, its car drivers that cant lol.

Am I right in thinking that the shopper bus, although it presently travels along the Strand, does not stop anywhere along it? If so, can someone who knows please tell me the nearest places it presently stops at nearest to The Strand. I know it stops at the viaduct. Anywhere else?

The idea of the bus is to unable most of its travellers (elderly) easy access to the shops!!!! how will High St work wondering when the traffic will be exiting that way and will cause more hold ups than will be anticipated, see not easy closing off Strand is it!!!!!!!!!!

Lynne..there is not an official stop in The Strand, though it has been seem to drop people off. The stops are at the Viaduct and eastbound at the shelter stop. If the traffic is reversed down the High Street it would no serve the Strand anyway. Route as now via Brumswick towards the Surgery.

The bus goes along Old Town St, Park Road, Queen St , Strand along Exeter Road and outwards

If the High Street is reversed..it will avoid the Strand, so from Park Road straight into High Street (no bends or congestion at cost cutter) and down to the seafront and back up Exeter Road. as said before it does not stop in the Strand anyway, pick ups as noe at main bus stops..No problem.

Brazilnut, you are one of the few who realises that closing the Strand to Traffic will be a nightmare. All the coaches and delivery vehicles, that currently drive up Brunswick Place and exit via the Strand, will now exit up Queen Street and right along High Street to continue up Exeter road. This traffic will of course be joined by all the dozens of vehicles that previously drove up High Street from Exeter road.

Major roadworks will be needed at the top of Queen Street for Coaches, Brewery lorries and all the other large vehicles who drive through Dawlish, so they can turn right into High Street.

There will be a lot of work needed to widen High Street to cope with these vehicles. Wonder what the costing is for that, has it been published?? and who is paying for these roadworks??

Are there plans for Traffic lights at the junction of Exeter Road and Iddleseigh Terrace to allow this volume of traffic to get into Exeter road.

I await the chaos with amusement.

Thank you wriggler at least my glasses are not rose tinted,lol High St is mainly residential how can you widen road without knocking down peoples houses. If traffic uses the other exits same problems will exist Barton Terrace / Plantation Terrace . Park Road/OldTown St/Church St/Oak Hill is a nightmare now let alone when this happens. I cannot for the life of me understand why they want to isolate and kill this town off

Yep Brazilnut, and delivery people and coaches coming into town from Torquay who need to continue on their journey towards Exeter, don't want to go back out via West Cliff road and down Teignmouth Hill again. Plantation Terrace can't cope so High Street is the only way out of Town, it's going to be a busy road.
I don't think people realise just how many delivery vehicles and coaches drive up Brunswick Place every day or how many cars use High Street from Exeter road. I wonder if there has been a traffic count to decide the level of improvements that will be needed in High Street to cope with all those extra vehicles, and will traffic turning right at the top of Queen Street have priority over traffic from Old Town Street. Couldn't find any info on these things in the 'MASTER PLAN'.
Anyone who lives in Dawlish knows that there is always, that is ALWAYS, at least 1 or 2 vehicles parked on the double yellows in Queen Street, it's bad enough now, imagine the gridlock when the Queen Street traffic increases 20 fold.

Parking time restriction in Brunswick Place is irrelevant, timed parking isn't enforced in Dawlish. I often see people park all day and when I queried this the wardens told me they don't bother to look at the time, just for a valid ticket.

There is several scenarios you can think of where there will be an accident waiting to happen!!!! I encountered this the other day coming down Queen St by Dawlish News an Argos lorry swung round the corner missing me by inches, good job my brakes held!! but this will become normal in the future as these lorries cannot take the corners like cars

Sorry Brazilnut, just got in, will pick up a copy tomorrow. Took a good look at Queen Street, am sure they will have to remove the pavement on one side to make it wide enough for Coaches and Large Trucks, that will be fun. But am sure they know what they are doing, so I will say no more and just observe.

If the proposals for the Strand are going to lead to a dead centre for the town then the numerous dead palm trees in Tucks plot will form a suitable backdrop.!
