as the late Jimmy Saville used to urge us all to do.
Get yourselves a Devon & Cornwall railcard (£10 for 12 months) and then you can get a third off train fares in D& C (okay but not during the rush hour I admit).
Not only is travelling by train quicker than travelling by bus it is also cheaper. Using my D&C railcard today I paid a mere £2.20 return railfare Dawlish/Newton Abbot. The journey takes about 13 minutes each way. The cheapest way of travelling to Newton Abbot by bus would be to buy one of those tickets where you can get on and off as many times as you like. Costs £7.00 something and then the journey seems to take forever to get to/from N.Abb. (the bus detours up through part of Kingsteignton on its journey either way - that in itself adds some 15/20minutes to the total travel time).
Cost and travel time to Exeter Central is similar to that of the Newton Abbot trip and of course in whichever direction you travel there are those lovely vistas of either the Exe or the Teign estuaries.
And just think of all that money you'll save on petrol and car-parking charges.
Now then, now then. "Rush hour" is more than an hour on the trains. Doesn't off-peak now start at 10am during the week?
How's about they use the recent price rises to put on more carriages during the peak times, for the commuters who would rather not drive or catch the bus?
Only putting on 2 carriages at 07:45 from Dawlish and 2 carriages at 17:21 from Central is a disgrace. I'd like to think that my fiver return would allow me to sit down.
Come the revolution, Nelson'll Fix It....
P.S.
I must add that the train journey between Exeter and Newton Abbot is one of the most wonderful in the country (just make sure you have a window seat on the left-hand side of the train).
Could not agree with you more Nelson. And of course the most beatiful views are on a train, especially through Dawlish Warren, and Dawlish.
