Why don't local shops open when consumers are available to spend their hard-earned cash?

Despite what you might read, a lot of people still work 9 til 5, and those people will therefore make their purchases at a time that's convenient to them.

Unfortunately, too many shops in too many towns only open at hours that are convenient to themselves.

I shopped at Sainsburys at 7pm tonight. Despite the sudden rain shower, there were still a lot of people spending a lot of money. Why? Because it's convenient.

At that time of night, parking is not a valid excuse for people not shopping in town. Shops not being open, however, is a valid excuse......

I understand why local business people might not want to work what they deem to be unsociable hours; however surely that's better than the alternatives that the doomsayers are predicting?

Sounds like a good idea the traders could try one night a week for a start and se how popular it is although it would need to be well advertised

Shops opening on a Saturday afternoon would be good. Try walking down Park Road after 1pm on a Saturday and most of the shops are shut!

Costcutters, One stop and Coop are open late, maybe the others could open until say 7pm, it might help, at least maybe trial it for say 1month

Thanks for feedback everyone. It needs to include the likes of Stokes and Lloyd Maunders and others who are complaining about the a drop in turnover - not just the big boys that Brazilnut mentioned.

Dare I also include Sundays in the equation? At least Ryders is now open on Sundays - well done to them.

we open from 7 am till 10 pm most nights cant do more lol

Hmmm. It seems that not all Dawlish shops are concerned about a lack of trade.

I went in to The Wee Shopee bakery today to buy 8 bread rolls. Not a difficult task you would think. Wrong! Despite there being plenty of rolls on the counter, they were packed in 4s (1 pack only) and 6s. Can you do me 8, I asked. No came the reply. Not the first time this has happened. Strange as the rolls were obviously packed by the shop themselves. OK I said then I'll go somewhere that can. And I did. Not difficult. Will I go back the The Wee Shopee? Possibly but probably not. Good to see someone doing so well they can turn away customers.

The Wee Shoppe get their stock delivered from their bakery in Teignmouth every morning so they just sell what is delivered every day as packed, am sure the thought of doing something different is completely alien. Pity, as that is normally the reason most people go to a small shop. I once wanted to place a regular order for a large quantity of scones and tried to order from their Bakery in Teignmouth. Difficult to deal with and wanted a silly price, so I rang the Sainsbury Store at Penn Inn, this was long before we had a local Sainsburys. Very helpful, ordered my scones, had to go there every week and collect but the cost saving and service was worth it and I did my shopping at the same time.
