A £55,000 traffic calming scheme has been scraped because it was too confusing. The scheme was introduced in March 2007 on a road at Powderham, Near Kenton, part of the major estuary cycle route and has been branded a complete waste of money.
The calming scheme involved installing bollards, traffic islands and white lines aimed at discouraging drivers by restricting the width of the road.
It has been removed after cyclists complained they did not know where they should be riding. A Devon County Council spokesman said "The route along the Estuary Road was designed using experimental traffic measures based on Cycling England guidelines which aimed to calm vehicle speeds, for the benefit of both pedestrians and cyclists. Road surface maintenance has taken place and it will now become a 20 mph zone."
