Dangerous vermin or god's creatures that were here long before the black swans? What's your opinion?
They only come inland and not stay out at sea because they know poeple chuck food on the ground, eat as they walk and feed them. If i was a Seagull I know which I would choose lol.
I've never considered eating seagull. But there again I'm not a pikey. What does seagull taste like?
I once read that someone who was stranded out in open sea caught and ate a seagull, which he said tasted of fish, presumably because that's what it had been eating. Also it would have been eaten raw (nice!) Knowing what our seagulls eat, what do you think they would taste like?
I don't see the correlation between humans feeding the seagulls, and the seagulls eating duck and swan eggs. Surely if the gulls are being fed, then they won't be hungry and therefore they won't eat duck and swan eggs? Or is that too logical?
The St Kildan's used to eat fulmars - which are similar in size to our herring gull. http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/item/item_photograph.jsp?item_id=22673. Perhaps we should revive the tradition to keep numbers down!?
Seriously though, they are a pest. One way to reduce their numbers would be to stop them from nesting in town as this increases the numbers of gulls who learn to scavenge instead of finding fish at sea. Allowing a seagull to nest on your roof should be as socially unacceptable as letting your dog foul the path.
Am I imagining things or have both those two posts from Nelson above been edited? I ask because I'll swear that both contained words when I looked at 'em earlier today.
@Lynne. go to 'account' (top right of screen), and then 'forum posts' (left hand column), et voila! :-)
