Dawlish Discussion

Teignbridge introduced free Sunday parking until March next year in car parks, which means you can park free in

• Barton Hill, Dawlish
• The Strand, Dawlish
• Sandy Lane, Dawlish
• Inner Car Park, Dawlish Warren
• Outer Car Park, Dawlish Warren

Now, as Dawlish is such a small town, wouldn't it make more sense to include ALL parking? - Include the Strand, the Brunswick and Marine Parade too? Then the traders could promote the town with a banner on the Viaduct announcing "Free Parking on Sundays".

On Sunday I saw cars that had paid to park on the Brunswick, presumably because they didn't know there was free parking on Barton Hill, and one with a parking ticket who may have thought it was free.

Agreed. It is confusing. Also, the more free parking there is, the less cost effective it must be to enforce restrictions for the remaining spaces.

Isn't on-street parking managed by Devon County Council, rather than Teignbridge District Council?

I can't keep track of that either. Certainly in Teigmouth a while ago, some parking was managed by Teignbridge and some by Devon.

Yes Nelson, Street parking is run by Devon County Council and the Car Parks by Teignbridge. The free Sunday parking is offered by Teignbridge, ie Car Parks but street parking is still chargeable.
You can park at anytime 24/7 with a blue badge in the street (controlled by DCC) but need a permit from the TDC if you want to park for free in the carparks, that is quite silly.

Actually free street parking in small towns like Dawlish is not good for business as many people park all day so visitors who want to shop are unable to park as spaces don't become available so often.

There are no proper signs in the Carparks, just a small sticker on the ticket machines so many motorists still pay, but street parkers have no excuse as the parking restriction signs are perfectly clear. If I park in an area I don't know I always walk down the street to find the 'restriction' signs.
