THE final phase of a scheme to prevent another devastating flood at a Dawlish Warren residential park has been given the go-ahead.

Eight years ago, about 100 people had to be rescued by RAF helicopters and coastguards using inflatables, from Hazeldown Park, now Beechwood Residential Park, after the Shutterton Brook burst its banks. The water rose up to six feet and it was a major emergency with many elderly residents being given refuge in a local hall.

In 2004 £1million was spent on beefing up the flood defences, and this week the Teignbridge Council executive committee, under its land drainage powers, gave approval for a pumping station, costing about £80,000, which should ensure there are no repeats of the December 2000 incident. The equipment will switch into action when drains from the area are unable to empty into the brook at high tides.
