My conversation with a Dawlish NIMBY the other day:

NIMBY: I see in the Dawlish Gazette that they are now building 900 homes instead of the 2000.
Me: That's a shame.
NIMBY: No doubt they will find a way between now and 2020 to build more.
Me: Well it is good they are building more homes isn't it?
NIMBY: They are also planning on building a new school (and something else I can't remember). It'll be full of people on benefits.
Me: Surely you want your grand children to have somewhere to live when they are older don't you?
NIMBY: I don't think my grand children will want to live in Dawlish.
Me: Why not?
NIMBY: They will have good careers and live somewhere else.
Me: Like where? How do you know they wouldn't want to live in Dawlish?
NIMBY: (muffled something).
Me: OK, See ya. (muffled tw@t).

love the response Steve, very typical of some people and most of them have moved here from elsewhere, they are the WORST

Hmmmm........I wonder where a lot of the people who will live in the new houses will come from? Elsewhere perhaps?

I was talking about nimbys who are already here, so dont twist it around. Are you a nimby Lynneyou seem to be against it all and youve only been in Dawlish a few years I think. By the way why did you move here?

Lynne
Lynne
21 Oct 2011 18:24

I'm not against sustainable development. It's when i believe that what is being proposed is not sustainable or feasible that I object.

Is there a qualifying period of residence then before those of us who have moved here are entitled to express our opinions?

Why did I move here? For all sorts of reasons.

Brazilnut

21 Oct 2011 18:53

No you dont have to qualify, but why do the majority of people who move here think its ok to inflict their opinions on what Dawlish should or should not have. You must have liked it enough to move here so why not just enjoy it instead of looking for every negative.

The majority, Brazilnut? That's a rather sweeping statement.

I've no idea of Lynn's circumstances, but surely how long she's lived here is irrelevent. The point is that she cares enough about where she lives to have an opinion on what happens here. Isn't that exactly what every town should want?! Whether you agree with those opinions or not is besides the point.

So....400 or so people responded to the draft plan. Dawlish has a population of just under 14,000. Don't know how many are under 13 (I've said 13 as I understand the youth of the town were consulted about the plan as well as us adults) but that's still a lot of the population (thousands of 'em in fact) that didn't respond. That's not my fault or the fault of those that did respond, is it?

So........... no-one is inflicting their opionions on anyone are they. It's just that some are participating in this exercise whilst the vast majority it seems are not.

I have no idea how many of those 400+ responses are from those who have always lived here or those who have moved here. Does anyone? Is it relevant?

And as you also say Brazilnut if I liked it enough to move here then I should enjoy it. I do. And because I have no wish to see it spoilt I do make my voice heard loud and clear when I think that is what might happen.

As Myrtle 77 says, how long I have lived here is irrelevant and whilst you are of course perfectly entitled to disagree with my opinions, I am nontheless entitled to them.

Lynne you are entitled to your opinion but you always look for the negative not the positive, and you always go on and on with relevant documentation newspaper articles etc we are not stupid that if we were interested enough we could look for ourselves, thats all Im saying. 2 Exeter Rd what you could have said was at last something is going to be done about this eyesore, planning permission has been lodged to turn into 2 detached dwellings, see how different it sounds

I look for the negative, do I? When I posted that info about the planning app for 2 Exeter Road I quite deliberately made no comment about it as I posted it as a matter of information.

Relevant newspapers articles - as I have said before Brazilnut - if you are not interested in them then don't read them. Others maybe interested. And I am certainly appreciative of others posting links on this website concerning all sorts of matters. If I am not interested in something I don't look at it.

Is it me or have we had this conversation before?

As I cannot transcribe Rainbow1's posting above I cannot respond.

your legacy will be the death of Dawlish. I hope you are not proud of your campaign which will result in the end of the once in a lifetime opportunity to save our town. I assume you werent out volunteering with the town tidy up as advertised in the paper. You take take take but do nothing tangible in return. i luv ma hubby! xxx

Brazilnut - you don't have to be bored to death. All you have to do is quite simple. Don't read what I post.

Rainbow1 - my campaign! What campaign is that? All I have been doing is putting forward arguments on this website. Which others have also contributed to I might add. My campaign indeed! Am I that influential? Really? I don't think so.

You're absolutely correct I didn't go out tidying up the town. I am sure that many others who have strong feelings one way or the other with regard to the draft plan also didn't go out. Does that invalidate what they think even if it should be the case that they might agree with you?

Me? Have so much influence? Get real!

the death of dawlish will be leave blood on the hands of you and the mere 399 other NIMBYs like you. I hope you can sleep at night. you and the nutters at the anti-improvement terrorists called DARE, do nothing but moan about our town, yet do nothing tangible or constructive to try to improve it. Instead of being AGAINST, try being FOR. You might feel better about yourself. You make me sick thinking that you are better than the likes of me, what with your big words and condescension. but believe me you, you are nothing but bad news for dawlish. instead of boring us to death with your publicity seeking, try being an unsung hero and doing something that will actually benefit dawlish. transcribed by Mr Rainbow for my beautiful missus.

There are so many assumptions and exaggerations in that posting of yours above Rainbow1 that I'm not even going to attempt to address them.

But know this. As neither you nor Brazilnut or anyone else for that matter (with the exception of the webmaster) hold editorial (or should that be censorship?) rights on this website I have every intention of posting on whatever subjects I wish to post on using whatever words I wish to use.

Now, shall we agree to call it a day?

Like many i stopped coming on here to post Brazilnut because i was sick of the same few people slagging Dawlish all the while. They find fault all the while, even with positive events.

Then there is the endless boring crap about housing .If we want our town to survive then we need more users of it. More houses means just that.

Dawlish is a great town, thats why so many tourists come here and love the place. If you moaners want it to be better , get off your lazy arses and do something about. The clean up, dawlish in bloom are just two things of late.

Brazilnut

24 Oct 2011 13:47

Totally agree with Rainbow and J Warrener, despite what the nimbys want we do need all these improvements that are being suggested, more houses mean more trade for Dawlish also it might stop our children and grandchildren from leaving where they want to live. If they get their way Dawlish will die and become 1 giant retirement home

I haven't read all of all the posts above because my initial reaction to the first post ensures a response.

The comment by the NIMBY about the new homes being full of people claiming benefit.

Thank God for the welfare state I say, I have had the misfortune to be unable to work for the last few months due to ill health. The Employment Support Allowance has helped me keep my sanity. It's not a lot of money but it's taken the pressure off my other half who had to be the sole earner for that time.

I'm not the stereotypical 'Shameless' type of person, I've worked ever since I left school but when I needed the help it was there - would I then be one of the undesirables as I was on benefit?

BTW Rainbow1 - see talking like an adult doesn't really hurt and strangely enough people then bother to read your posts.

I come on holiday here every year and I throughly enjoy the place. My 2, two weeks holidays, every year are very enjoyable.I have been coming hear since I was 16,I am now 52.It Is a lovely place, would not want to go any where else. The people are lovely and I always have a breakfast at Baileys or the cafe which Is near/next to Harrisons Amusements. So why are you people putting down Dawlish? Quite frankly, I do not know.

SBATTS43 , can i give you some advice . Baileys is the worst place to eat in Dawlish. The cafe is dirty, the chips horrible(thats why our seagulls are so big). I think the other cafe you mentioned is the Terrace. They do a great breakfast i agree. You will get a great meal at any of the other cafe's in Dawlish. Witches bowl does 2 for 1 for a fry up on a saturday. Bay Windows is great now its been taken over and th2 cafes next to Baileys are also great. The once place all the locals avoid is Baileys , who tend to cater the pensioners getting off coaches and daytrippers who hit the 1st place from the beach.

Rock and Sole beats it everytime, large choice of fish and tasty chips. You can see how unclean baileys is just by looking in the window. The warmers dont look like they've been cleaned properly for years. If you sit in the cafe the cups are dirty and the knives and forks are filthy. I'll give it a miss thanks.. With so many other decent ones to choose from , you must work there.smiley

Trains , not my cup of tea, but they are for many visitors to dawlish and long may that continue. Seals , if you sit at Pirates Chest you will regularly see them. An adult and pup come very close while feeding.

Dolphins, seen every year, especially early in the morning. One afternoon this summer a dolpin was following one of the little boats along , watched by everyone at Pirates chest and everyone on the beach. Twenty minutes later betwwen 30-50 were then seen by everyone from Dawlish Warren all the way to Teignmouth. They were very close to the shore.

You want to try getting out from behind you computer Dallas , you sure your from Dawlish.
