Slagging Dawlish? ( I'll assume that's what you said). Who's slagging Dawlish? Quite the contrary. That's what these posts of mine (and others) are all about. It's because we care about it. We need to be aware of all the issues, all the pros and cons if you like, so that we can think carefully about its future.
Now, that is not to say that we will all agree - of course we won't. And whilst some will welcome with open arms the thought of their being huge amounts of house building in the town - others will look upon the idea with abject horror.
Oops! How remiss! re:New housebuilding in Dawlish - I forgot to mention the 58(?) dwellings being built on the site of Treston House ( between Eastcliff Road and Newlands) and the 61 dwellings being built at the Sandpiper developement in Dawlish Warren.
So that's 58+61 aleady being built already plus 144+251 with planning permission to be built. That equals er........514. Say average occupancy of 2.5 persons that equals enough new dwellings for 1,285 people.
Now, some might think that's enough to be getting on with for the time being thank you very much but somehow I doubt very much that TDC will be thinking along such lines.
A reply to the haters
Gatehouse school were once fields too, where animals lived & also the whole of Carhaix estate were fields where I played as a child. I suppose none of the facebook folk moaning have not stepped foot in the new Sainsburys then?..... Where wildlife once roamed! If people bought local produce that was grown on local farming land & didn't rely on supermarkets then local farms would not have to sell land to all those baby machine making couples who need houses to live in! Get your heads out of your arses! Hypocrites...
What is so wrong with a town developing? Nothing....as long as it's not on my doorstep is the theme amongst the narrow minded residents!
Dawlish is dead, it's too late to save & you know it! I will be moving from my hometown in the near future.
Well said dawlishbornanddead, The NIMBYs are alive and well in Dawlish. Since I moved to Dawlish I have heard 'regeneration, regeneration, ad nauseum. Regenerate WHAT, I have filled in the same questionnaires year after year, seen thousands spent on 'surveys' to achieve precisely NOTHING.
My neighbours have lived here for 2 years and have kids at school here, they are leaving next month after 2 years as they have been unable to rent a decent property for a sensible price. Build new houses in Dawlish, shock horror, it might encourage people to live here and spend money!!!!!!!

The field at Gatehouse farm does not soley belong to Andrew Goodridge. Andrew Goodridge sold his share in the field taking an outright payment from the developers, then jumped on the opposing bandwagon to get the building stopped. What Andrew Goodridge set out to achieve was to gain a payment from developers then do his best to be a 'snake in the grass' against the folk of Dawlish who have opposed the building of houses. Nothing more would please Mr A Goodridge more than making personal gain and then being the hero to stop the development, he would win both ways by getting a smaller payment five years ago and keeping a share in the field so he could keep farming whilst holding up 'two fingers'. It was good to see that Mr Goodridges true colours were exposed in the recent Dawlish Post. The land has been ear marked for building for the last twenty years and thats probarly years before you moved into your house that was built on a nice green field.
Yes, I have to say I have heard all sorts of stories alleging all sorts of things concerning the buying and selling of land (including James's Plantation) and Andrew Goodridge. Must admit I was a bit confused at the look on his face in the picture in the paper as much as I was by the article. I got the impression that he wasn't happy that this would be his last harvest. In which case, I thought to myself, why did you sell your land to the developers? No-one made you do it, did they?
You say that land's been ear-marked for building for the last twenty years? That doesn't surprise me at all. Don't doubt that other land in the immediate vicinity is ear-marked in exactly the same way. It will be interesting to see where the new house building is proposed to take place when the draft Dawlish Local Plan goes public later this week. Anyone want to lay any bets as to what farm land it is proposed the new houses get built on?
Believe my house was built on the site of an orchard some 80 or so years ago. Which doesn't make it okay, in my mind, for land that is presently used for food producing land also to be built on. We need to keep our food producing land doing precisely what it is doing now - producing food.
I know more than most Lynne. The plan is to replant old orchards (should please you) with posh houses in between. Adjacent to The Paddocks & opposite the school. ;) Dawlish needs to move forward or die. No one really cares for a new bandstand. The lawn needs developing into a Teignmouth Den style place to get families into the town. Otherwise there is no reason to go there, unless you have a unhealthy habit of buying second hand clothes, viewing endless estate agents or you can't quite decide which hairdresser will cut your hair this month! It's a shocking & desperate town to live in nowadays.
Anybody know what the situation is with regard to those barn conversion places down Secmaton Lane opposite the school? I've never known a development to take so long. Now and again you see people working there but its still not finished.
Are they waiting for changes to planning consent or just working very slowly?
Agree with you about the town - the lawn deffo needs something to get people to go into the town. No doubt though that what that should be will be a huge topic of debate.
Re the new plan & housing. You on the Steering Group then dbad or has someone been showing you something they shouldn't have?
Actually there is a huge hint at where the new houses will more than likely go if you look at the plans submitted by the developer who will be building on Mr Goodridge's cornfield. Yep! back in 2008 when the plans were submitted to TDC there for all to behold in the Design and Access statement is a map of the development showing a road leading from the cornfield site and pointing in a northerly direction across Secmaton Lane to the farmland opposite. Now, ask yourselves this question. Why plan for a road to built that would presently only go onto Secmaton Lane and then farmland. No reason is there. Unless of course...........
@flo - yes i've often thought the very same. probably just doing enough to keep the planners and the planning consent happy. thought they were to be holiday lets. if so, they won't be in a nice rural location for much longer will they? soon they'll be surrounded by builders and all the noise and dirt that will bring. then shortly after that even more houses, and houses, and houses, and houses, and.........
How long I wonder before a planning app. goes in requesting that they also become houses for sale.
I'd be interested to know where next to the Paddocks the houses will be. St Marychurch applied for permission to build more affordable housing in the land behind the Paddocks a while back and were turned down. This was on the area originally promised as a play area.
I wish any houses that were built were more in the Paddocks vein rather than lots of big expensive houses with a couple of affordables to pretend to be doing it for the good of the town. Those houses built in Dawlish Warren, is it Sandpipers, are completely out of the price range of most locals.
Hate to tell you this Flo but I don't doubt for one moment that the houses to be built will be mostly for the open market with a few affordable (whatever 'affordable' means) dwellings thrown in.
According to TDC any new housing in Dawlish should be 30% affordable. Anyone who thinks the developers are going to produce that amount is living in cloud cuckoo land. Although there is an amount of affordable housing at The Sandpipers site it doesn't constitute 30% of the development and on Mr Goodridge's cornfield I believe only 15% of the development will be affordable.
And is there any gurantee that any affordable housing that does get built will go to those with a need for such housing who already live in the parish of Dawlish or who have a strong link to Dawlish? I don't think so (but would love to be proved wrong).

Well dbad all will be revealed in a few days time won't it for all to see - so I guess that after that time none of us will have to er........guess anymore.
Who and where are these other people like me? I'm intrigued. Do I have doppelgangers in the town then?
Holding Dawlish back? All I'm doing is raising questions, and putting information in the public domain and as there will be a public referendum on this local plan for Dawlish it will be up to the people of Dawlish to decide on its future. Me (and the likes of me, whoever they are) will have but one vote just like everyone else in the parish.
Could be some interesting debates and meetings in the coming weeks. Looking forward to it.
