Thanks for posting this link!

It might be worth commenting on the application if you support it - the consultation period closes this Friday. It looks like the plan is to replace the main span of the bridge with a material that will stand up to marine erosion better, but it will all look pretty much the same. (It's a listed structure, and in the conservation area. Those of you who followed the Willos saga and/or have been wondering why it's taken so long to apply to carry out this work may be interested in section 7.0 of the Design & Access statement, regarding consultation with TDC Conservation Officer).

I see what you mean about our 'friend' the Conservation Officer.

Anyone any idea when and for how long this work will take place? I ask because it says in section 6.0 of the Design and Access statement that "in order for the construction works to be undertaken on site there will be a requirement for the closure of the railway station and the possesion of the railwayline in this location" and that this will have a subsequent disruptive effect on the rail service.

I dont care how long it takes or how much it costs = Replace the footbridge and refurbish the

viaduct. Fortunately we dont need a pyramid !

I agree, the first thing one see's when approaching Dawlish by train is a tired, rusty unkept bridge and we all know what first impressions create. Once off the station one see's a tired neglected viaduct bridge which any decent engineer would be appalled to view. Then we make our away along the Brook and see weed and algae collecting debris and litter. This all has an effect on the general impression of the town.

I work on the sea front and a retired engineer from South Wales informed me that back home they would never allow a bridge to be in this state, furthermore he questioned how often the rivetts are checked in the structure. Why the rail company could not have fixed facia boards to the bridge saying something like " Welcome to Dawlish" I do not not know? they make a great deal of money from the tourism as well, and put up their prices on Air Day (do they make any contribution to the fund?) This would not have cost a great deal even if it was silk-screened plastic banners.

Let's face it the Railway, Environment Agency, DEFRA, Teignbridge DCC, Nat West & Lloyds Banks (that constantly run out of money in the ATM's or chuck out £20's) don't give a stuff about Dawlish residents, businesses or visitors. If visitors get frustrated with the cash machines or think the town does not look as inviting as in the past they can always move on to that great Teignmouth place 3 miles down the road (however if by Rail they will see a tired railway bridge there as well).
