Just heard on Radio Devon about proposed Devon County Council cuts. One that is proposed is the closure of the recycling civic amenity site at Shutterton.

Your thoughts?

We already new about the tip closing at Shutterton. It was on here a while ago

My thought is that If this happens up and down the country then expect to see fly-tipping make a come back.

yes I know it was on here a while ago but from what I can gather Devon County Council subsequently denied that it was going to happen.

Totally agree that fly-tipping will make a come back and I can think of a few places in and around Dawlish that will make ideal places for that to happen. Lovely! Just think how that will improve our environment and impress (not!) our holidaymakers.

I understand the need to save money but to shut the tip at Dawlish? So much for a green policy of hundreds of cars driving to Newton or Exeter using petrol and the exhaust emissions they produce.

Why not dump the underworked and overpaid bureacrats who thought this one up.

Yes, the irony of Dawlish having a new supermarket to stop people having to travel all the way to Exeter or Newton to do their shopping but then closing the tip thus causing them to do exactly the same thing in order to dispense of their rubbish has not gone unnoticed!

I'll swear that 'call me Dave' said he wanted this government to be the greenest one ever. So that's why train fares have gone up as well I suppose.

A thought. Perhaps the 'Big Society' could come to the rescue? I can see the stampede of volunteers offering to operate that tip as clear as day.

NOT.

Lynne - Dont panic we can all use Sainsbury's new car park to dump our rubish, after all they are commited to providing the town with what we all need are'nt they ??????? In any case they must be listening to someone who has never owned a business in Dawlish cause they certainly won't need 250+ parking spaces for anything else. Will make a nice race track though - Thanks

Fronteraman - Tesco's at Lady's Mile could provide similar race tracks?

My arguing for Sainsbury's as opposed to Tesco was based on pragmatism given that the debate as to whether or not Dawlish should have a new supermarket had already been decided - in favour that it should. So....... given that Dawlish was therefore to get a new supermarket the debate then ultimately moved on as to where said new supermarket should be located - Shutterton Bridge or Lady's Mile. Of the two I thought, and still think, Shutterton Bridge the better site. Others feel and felt that it should be at Lady's Mile. Will be interesting to see the outcome of Tesco's Appeal which I understand is being reconvened in March.

Car parking spaces - perhaps 250 needed in height of tourist season do you think?

Maybe 250 needed for holiday makers, or more likely when they have built another 3 or 4 hundred houses all over the Warren and Gatehouse. Millwoods, Cavana, Baratts and Bovis must think we are stupid but ill tell you one thing it aint gonna happen on my watch weather councilor Tullis and other Conservativies think its a good idea or not. Sainsbury's and Tescos is one thing but a giant housing estate to satisfy the needs of Exeter NO WAY !!!!! Going back to the tip or recylcling center. It maybe that the aurthorities have to provide this service by law. Perhaps someone could check this out, obviously it dose'nt have to be at Shutterton.

By the way Lynne Tesco's will open on Lady's mile because the pressidence has now been set by Sainsbur'y's. However I personally feel that Sainsbury's may decide to rent the store at Shutterton to another retailer rather than open it themselves. Bring on ASDA next and make them provide a recylcling centre.

Don't follow your logic there Fronterman re Tesco's. How can Sainsbury's being given planning permission mean that Tesco will win their Appeal? Tesco might win their Appeal but equally might not. Not sure how Sainsbury's already building has set a precedence at this moment in time.

I've put at this moment in time in italics because it may be that in the future an argument could be made for a second supermarket (should Tesco lose their Appeal) once all those houses get built.

I believe the case was made that there is a need, now, for one supermarket only - and that is Sainsbury's. Imagine Tesco will have to prove that there is a need, now (ie not in the future), for two.

Also, with this new government and its policy of localism, I understand planners and the planning inspectorate have to take into account what the locals want and I'm pretty certain that, on the whole, Dawlish folk wanted a supermarket at Shutterton Bridge and not at Lady's Mile.

But we can only await the outcome of the Appeal.

Pretty certain that those planning permissions for all those new houses can't be undone. I think only a judicial review can undo them.

Will Sainsbury's stay at Shutterton Bridge? I think that will quite simply depend on how much profit the store makes.

Perhaps Sainsbury's could be asked to provide the funds to keep the present recycling centre open?

The funds for the tip are already provided for by the council tax and any cuts should be made elsewhere. How much of our tax is spent on inflation proof staff pensions.

It will also cost far more to clear up the new sites that will open up in the nearby countryside.

Perhaps those who object to the closure of the Shutterton tip could make representations to that effect to our Devon County Councillor.

It was merely a suggestion and I'll tell you why. Because............if no-one, or very few, in Dawlish let him know that we do not wish to have the tip closed then he can say, with hand on heart, that he has not been on the end of an overwhelming protest. Thus, if the tip shuts it will do so with him being under the belief that its survival was not worth his fighting for as most of Dawlish don't care.

Good point made their Lynne makes perfect sense, write in... have to admit I have never used the tip in 10 years! ..any rubbish I have has been able to go in der bin!

On opinions ..reminds me of doing a feedback survey on bus services..my boss said go out find out exactly what the people want!. This elderly lady at a door said 'oh my dear please dont take that bus off in the evenings it is so useful ..I know it is always empty, i've never used it but is so nice to see it still running!' (sorry off topic may bring a smile! ..we sure need it on here) lol.

I see in todays Express and Echo that DCC are proposing to charge us to dispose of our waste rather than closure

ie £2for a bag of waste that falls under the register of chargeable items, as a general rule charges will not be made for waste that can be recycled

Plastic/metal baths will not be charged but disposing of ceramic toilets cisterns sinks stone wall and floor tiles will be.Soil rubble paving slabs concrete fence posts will be but not grass cuttings vegetation and lawn mowers. Car tyres will be charged £2 each. Disposing of one bag of plasterboard or 1 sheet (8ftx4ft) of plasterboard will cost £7!!!!!!!!!!

Not heard any of our Conservative councilors commenting on how the people of Dawlish need a re-cycling center, then again Coastal waste probably don't contribute to party funds unlike a certain supermarket. Perhaps we can use the sally army building that we bought to dump our rubbish as it has no other practical use

How many loaded up and went to the re-cycling centre this weekend not realising it is no more. Remember your wasted trip on May 5th when you vote.

Not read much from the exsisting bunch of councilors on the subject, maybe one of the perks is that the Blitz team collect thier rubbish for them

Couldn,t agree more. People need to get rid of stuff they don,t need.More rural communities have skips at prescribed times for this purpose. If there was a waste "Hotline" they would be over run with "customers". Just work it out. Could even be economically viable.

Anyone else miss this over Easter? Will they invest savings in more mobile skips? Nah thought not

After making my first visit to Newton Abbot rubbish centre since closure of Shutterton I was presented by some jobsworth a sheet of charges on things that could be disposed of.

On reflection is this loud of b....cks just another way to increase council tax by stealth

Cut the bureaucrats and stop the inflation proof pensions.

The reason for closing Shutterton refuse was because of it's cost, so did they already have it in mind to charge us at Newton Abbot/Exeter,

If this is the case Shutterton could have made us pay and save us the journey.

As the sign near Newton Abbot says something like Look after the environment share a Car.

Better still turn off the sign and sack the bureaucrats.
