Oddicombe at high tide was the idyllic setting for the annual Devon County Open Water Championships. Dawlish Swimming Club, winners of the team trophy for four consecutive years, found the going tougher this time. Other clubs, keen to benefit from what will be a new Olympic event at London 2012, challenged in every category. Dawlish swimmers took three of the 12 medals contested, and Lauren Glindon, in her first open water race, top scored with silver honours. The ladies 12-16 years 1,500m. race saw Lauren Glindon coming second to British number two, Gracie Dack of Barnstaple. Dawlish also took third and fourth places with Ashley-Jayne Steer and Stephanie Evans. The Devonport Trophy for Dawlish Club champion went to Lauren Glindon. The men's 12-16 race was dominated by the full-time athletes of Kelly College, with Matthew Henry, a favourite to be British number one, a very impressive gold medal winner. Paul Wilson of Dawlish did well to split the Kelly swimmers to take a bronze medal, and scoop the Dawlish Open Water Championship, ahead of colleague Robin Shute.
