Some stores will stay open, while they look for a buyer, one of which I hope is Dawlish.

Dawlish Stokes is one of the shops saved (for now) Newton Abbot has gone. As for the Co-op it doesn't have the same selection, I went in there the other day for some chillies and was told oh we don't sell chillies! I was told today the only reason the Co-op bought Woolworths was so no other food chain would get in there, eg Tesco.

That is good news that Dawlish Stokes is staying open, and as for the co-op, more expensive and sub standard quality. But as you have said, its not good for those who have lost their jobs. Still, I suppose that stokes will eventually go when Sainsburys/Tescos opens its doors.

I remember a year or so ago many rubbishing Stokes ..so dont start saying you will miss them! I see on facebook Mouse is going to close. You must really all realise that there is no incentive for large business to open in Dawlish when they know you will all still go to Newton or Exeter. Barclays and HSBC saw the red light.

@ZIGGY coop already owned the woolworths site, somerfields and woolworths leased it from them. agree the choice in coop is limited, thats why i always use stokes and before that taylors

@wondering. excuse me but who is rubbishing stokes? no one who has commented on this thread has. i always have used stokes and never said anything bad against them, so i kindly suggest that you get your facts right before accusing people on this thread for doing such a thing.

hmmm excuse me I refer to these postings >>> https://www.dawlish.com/forum/item.aspx?id=6292#6264 and to whoever started this thread under 'shopping locally' > We have so many people complaining on this site about people not shopping locally and how Dawlish traders are not happy that people go elsewhere (whichever town or supermarket) to do their shopping. I would like to say that personally, i do my bulk buying at Tescos, Asda wherever the cheapest prices are, ut i like to use our local shops for fresh meat, and veg. However our local veg shop (Stokes) has now lost my custom, due to the poor quality of produce they sell. 2 days ago i went there and brought potatoes, peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes and bananas, all looking great on the outside. On trying to use these products yesterday half of it had to be thrown away as it was rotten inside. I had therefore to go to Tescos to replace these items,as they had better quality produce than i could get in Dawlish. Also like many families, i cannot afford to waste my money on shoddy food! Needless to say , all i will buy locally now is my fresh meat which i must point out, our butcher is very helpfull and the meat is of the finest quality. So before we have all these do gooders moaning and making us supermarket shoppers out to be the demise of Dawlish, maybe some of the local shops should take a good look at their prices and quality of goods they want us to buy!

So why didnt you take the veg back and complain? Im sure that they (stokes) would have been helpful, because as you say, they looked good on the outside. That could have happened anywhere and you cannot blame stokes for that.

I am hoping that the same is true for Teignmouth. Although I use Tibbs, it is good for the town to have more than one greengrocer.

ij have to say it wouldnt surprise me if that stokes teignmouth shop will be administration again soon. how they are keeping their customers is beyond me. the quality of the produce is appalling. it looks like the fruit and veg is old and isnt rotated at all. they never seem to be there til 8 in the morning so they must be leaving everything on at night. not ideal to maintain freshness.

True Red, Your comment re; they never seem to there til 8 is very unfair, I pass them everyday and they are allways there at 7am and possibly earlier setting up for the day

I think User4549 is confusing Stokes at Teignmouth with the old Stokes in Dawlish which does set up very early in the morning
